'98 S70 T5 no start - P0340 S70

Hello,

About 2 months ago, on a rainy day, the car wouldn't start. Have no clue why. Was visiting parents, so the car stayed there. Didn't actually need it, so it has stayed until now.

The battery was dead and wouldn't hold a charge, so I got a new one. When I went to try to start it, it started very roughly and died after about 10 seconds. After that, it refused to start. The starter goes, but nothing else happens.

I did pull a P0340 from the car, so I check the camshaft sensor connection.

Pin 1 - 12 V
Pin 2 - 12 V
Pin 3 - 3 ohm

According to Chilton, Pin 2 should be 5V and Pin 3 should be 0 ohm. So it says I need to "repair the circuit."

Problem being, I have no clue how I would do that. Is there any advice you could give me? Is there anyway to be sure that the camshaft sensor itself is not the problem?

If there's any important info I left out, please let me know.

Thank you in advance!

EDIT: also, I'm worried about the tires having problems because the car isn't being moved...when does this become a problem, if it hasn't already?

Ordered new camshaft position sensor, installed it, tried to start car,

    got p0340.

I'm assuming it's dealership time because I don't know what else to do, but I figured one last ditch post in hopes somebody else might have a better idea.

    Thanks in advance

P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction

You need to replace the CPS. It is worn out.

      Hi Klaus,

      Thanks for the quick response.

Do I not need to worry then about the readings from the pins? The new CPS will fix the issue? (That would be great if it did!)

Getting a 12V reading on the other pin indicates a short, internal. The 3 Ohms is acceptable.

          Hi again, Klaus

Because I have no real clue about these things, I do have to clarify one more thing:

I'm getting these readings from the connector (I wish I knew the proper terms) that the CPS connects INTO...not from the CPS itself.
Does that make sense? The permanent connector that's part of the car. Man, I wish I knew how to say this properly!

This being the case, is replacing the CPS still going to fix it? I guess I don't understand how the CPS being broken would make the other part of the connection give incorrect readings.

If it's a problem between that connector and the car's computer (I'm assuming it goes there)...how on Earth would that be repaired?

          Thanks for all your help!

Let me clarify a few things. I am a shade tree mechanic, not an ASE. I got my degree in liberal arts, not engineering. I have 5 different makes of cars in my garage, a change from when I had 3 Volvos and 2 others.

The CPS is a stationary device attached to the end of the rotating cam. The cam has 2 cutouts in the end which cause the signal from the CPS to change as it is turning. The 1998 uses this signal, via ECU, to determine timing compared with the crank position sensor. If the CPS fails, the engine will not start, assuming the cam is out of alignment. In newer cars, it determines when the coils get electricity.

In your case, all testing of the CPS must be done on the CPS, not the wire that goes to the harness. The error message needs to be believed, the CPS needs to be replaced.

Thanks for all your help with this, Klaus...good to see that at least one of us knows what he's talking about (and it's clearly not me)!

Good to know it's an easy fix
