V70 tailgate latch and light

Now that I have my son's car running again, (siezed turbo in '94 940, just needed to be rebuilt), I am now confronted with a problem with the wife's '99 V70.

Over the weekend we noticed the open tailgate light was staying on, even when the tailgate was closed. This morning, I get a call indicating the tailgate will not latch shut. Even after cycling the locks, the latch is not engaging.

I have not had a chance to dig into the tailgate yet, but am getting my info together. Not knowing the wiring to the tailgate, is it possible the two problems (tailgate light being on full time and non-engaging latch) related? At the very least, I figure I need to get the trim panels off the tailgate, and probably the trip along the roof in the back of the car to get access to the wire harness. Is there a switch in the roof like in the old 740's? Any tips on getting these trim panels off without breaking anything?

Any input appreciated.

Thanks,

    V70 tailgate latch and light

The light and latch are related. It is probably time to get new struts for the hatch as well, it does slam down when you close it, right?

The constant slamming can mess up the latch's plastic parts, or the hard rubber bushings on the side of the hatch opening.

Get a phillips screwdriver because it has a round shaft. Open the hatch, then close the latch with the screwdriver. Note the two positions. At the second click (locked), turn the ignition key to on and see if the warning light is out. If so, then moving the bottom latch bar on the bumper rearward 1/16inch will probably solve the problem.

If the dash light does not go out, then there is a micro switch inside the lock that is no longer working. Dealer wants gobs of money for a replacement.

BTW, locking/unlocking has nothing to do with the latch.
