Hey everyone!

I have an opportunity to buy either a '97 850 R or a '98 T-5

What do you think?

Please elaborate as much as possible!

Thanking everyone in advance,

TERRANCE

Re: '97 850 R 0r '98 T-5 850 97

I have a 98 T5. The T5 is probably quite a bit different then the

R models. The T5 suspension will be softer in comparison and won't

handle as well. But, it won't beat your kindeys to death, either.

So, I think what you need to look at is how important handling is

vs. every day ride and comfort. The T5 is a fast, comfortable sedan.

The R is going to be more "high spirited" and will give away a bit

(or a lot, in comparison to a T5) of comfort in favor of handling.

The T5 can also be had in a manual transmission (U.S. market) and

the R model is automatic only. Hey, if you are in europe you can

get a 98 S70R!

As far as engine, both have plenty of power -- traction is

typically the limiting factor and I would not expect to see much

difference in straight line performance between the two.

Re: '97 850 R 0r '98 T-5 850 97

The Alcantara seats are what convinced me in the end to get my '97 R. I bought it used in early '98 and had a choice between a S70 T5 for a couple grand more or the R.

Some other reasons:

- The R had less turbo lag

- I don't really like the plastic trim in the S70

- The R had better handling but not unbearably stiff

- The S70 was in its first year of production and I was worried about defects. Turns out my R had several problems so in retrospect this is probably not an issue. Whichever one you get make sure you get an extended warranty that covers the A/C system. The A/C evaporators in both cars are problematic and cost about $1200 to replace.
