Transmission clunk when shifting into reverse V70-XC70

My 2004 V70 2.5T geartronic transmission often produces a noticeable metallic clunk when shifting into reverse. The sound has been there on some level for a long time. I am really only posting because I am now over 100,000 miles and am getting a little nervous. The transmission shifts very nicely and quietly in drive on the road. I flushed with 16 qts of 3309 at 90k (I realize I put this off for some time.) The upper transmission mount is the new style square mount and has developed wiggle/play but is not torn (I doubt these ever tear?) as the older mounts do (as with my C70.) The lower transmission mount is not noticeably damaged. Should I be concerned?

Have there been any software upgrades from the dealer? The tranny is supposed to 'shift' into 'neutral' when stopped, so there should not be any noise when shifting into R.

This explains a lot. The neutral at stop is interesting. My background is 900 series RWD cars DIY. I've had the same clunk over the last year or two on a 2004 NA v70 w/150k miles, and thought it might be drive shafts...wheel bearings....transmission...anything. Steve's description of the clunk sound when putting the car in reverse...and forward for that matter...is the same thing I experienced. Plus...the car has been to the dealer lately for follow-up on key programming and each time the clunk goes away for a long time.

But it's back again, although not as pronounced as in the past. Does a V70 tranny need reprogramming now and then?

        Programming transmissions V70-XC70

The AW tranny is used in lots of different cars with different bhp and torque values. In order to mate the tranny output to the engine output, software is used. The software is developed in a lab with ideal conditions.

When the cars get used with thousands of different driving styles and driving conditions, updates are then created to match so the tranny doesn't break. The updates are permanent, they do not disappear when the battery is disconnected.

When the engine computer is updated, this might also have an effect on the TCU which could have a positive effect on the way a tranny works. Most mechanics that I know will apply multiple updates when ever a car is in need of a programming change, like security. Just bringing the ECU up to date, hopefully saving a future date with the shop to have more updates applied.

There are more computers on the new Volvos than my 1967 has fuses! And all of these computers must be 'in sync' for the entire car to operate smoothly.

I don't believe the transmission software has been updated. I typically notice the metallic clunk when I move the shift lever from park into reverse when backing out of the garage. Should I take the car to my dealer and inquire about updating the transmission software?
      Thank you

Call the dealer service reps and ask if there are any outstanding software updates for the tranny.

But, before you make an appointment. Get a helper to shift the tranny for you while you go around the car to determine where the noise is actually coming from. Set the parking brake and put a 2X4 behind the front wheels, don't trust your helper to have a firm push on the brake :)

The noise could even come from a loose exhaust bracket.

My dealer looked at my car today. They did find a suspension piece that needed tightening. The technician also updated the transmission software. The remaining noise is considered normal. Drives and shifts beautifully. We do have a very good dealer service department here. I am pleased! Just wanted to close the loop on this one.
