Gas mileage problem... C70 1998

Hi folks,

I recently replaced my bald Michelins with Sumitomo tires. Awesome tires so far. But one concern though...Ever since then my average mpg has dropped considerably as much as 3mpg. Is this a normal thing or is there something wrong with my new setup. Thanks in advance for all you input.

Mike H.

Mike,

Did you change to another size other then stock? Thus affecting the odometer, speedometer and mpg (trip computer?)

Are you maybe driving faster now since you are no longer afraid to spin the bald tires or have a blowout at higher speeds.

Nope, not that either. I'm actually driving a little slower than I was before cuz I don't know how the tires handle in certain conditions.

Roll resistance. The composition of tires varies. Both the construction and rubber compound can effect how "difficult" it is to roll the tire.

Stickier tires are just that - stickier. This means the tread tries to remain atached to the road surface. Good for laterial control and traction but also increases the effort needed to roll.

This is greater at low speeds and less at high speeds. But low speeds were where you used to get your better mileage.

Perhaps tire pressure differences?

Nope, tried that. I have the same pressures on as my old setup.
