Odd motor squeal................ 850

My wife pulled into the driveway last night with the 1997 850 squealing like a stuck pig. I figure it's a bad tensioner on the serpentine belt, or even bad bearing on one of the accessories. However, I just pulled the belt off and check each of them and they were fine. Now, get this, I started the car with the belt removed and it makes the same noise! I am at a loss, and wanted to check here before I start tearing it apart. Any ideas??

You do have the headlight wiper motors disconnected right?

It's the baseline 850 model - so I don't have any of that fancy headlight wiper stuff. :-)

It really blows my mind. I pulled it back into the driveway tonight and there was no noise. I started it again later and the sound was right there again - almost metallic sounding, but it went away by the time I opened the hood. Started it a few more times and couldn't get it to repeat the sound.

Because the squeal is so constant when it is present - my only thought is crankshaft. It only has 198k though.........

If you don't run out of oil, the crank bearings are good to over 500K miles.

Is it still making noise after a new filter?

          Hi Klaus-

It did still make the noise after the oil change - but it has stopped. It comes and goes - which blows my mind. Since bringing it out of the garage, I can't get it to make the noise. Because it made the same sound, but would change frequency at higher rpms, I was thinking crank shaft or torque converter. However - it made the same sound in park and drive so I've been leaning towards crank.

Unfortunately, because I can't get it to duplicate the sound my diagnosis is limited. The motor mount below the crank shaft is suspect. But, when it was making the noise, tweaking it didn't seem to help.

So now, my dilemma is that I have a car that appears to be fine that I don't dare to drive! :-)

          Mike

I've been hitting it with two stethoscopes - one flat and another with a long probe. I probably look ridiculous but sometimes they help! Given that the sound was directly correlated to engine speed - I am convinced my problem is under the hood.

I had a friend here who thought it was more of a metallic whine than a squeal - but honestly, he couldn't believe it wasn't a belt either - however, we both seem to think it was coming from the driver's side. I initially chalked that up to bad acoustics.

If I can get it to make the noise again I'd like to check where the engine mounts to the tranny, and maybe even the air pump. However, I'm not getting any codes. I have left the timing belt uncovered since if I can diagnose this, she's definitely getting a new one. In the meantime, I might replace the lower motor mount and see if that is a possible source. I have the V70 ready to go - I am simply delaying announcing a time of death..........I'd love to hit 200k and would hate to over react to a potentially silly glitch.

And Klaus - I don't have AAA anymore - once I switched to only Volvos I found I wasn't using it anymore!

The only 'moving' part on the driver's side is the tranny pump. Check the fluid level?

I never had AAA until I had a bunch of old Volvos :)

You have to pinpoint the noise, with the timing belt cover off. Even if we could hear it, we can't help if we don't know where it is coming from.

If you have a AAA card, take it 5 miles round trip at high rpms and see what happens.

Good luck, you are going to need it.

...and it's definitely from the engine bay? It's not your air blower motor in the dash? Would a stethoscope help find it? Should you make a cone out of cardboard, or paper towel roll to listen and determine front or back or left or right? Is is type of squeal like from an electric motor (alternator)? or something else that spins and needs some lube power steering? steering stops? Let us know what you find.
            Thanks,

    The plot thickens.....

Changed the oil, added some Duralube - and still had the sound around 2k rpms. The new filter helped rule out a valve whistle, but I also noticed that my lower motor mount appears shot. After checking it with a pry bar I can't get the noise at any rpm.

My theory is that the failed mount dropped the motor low enough to cause some screaming in the torque converter. The flaw to my theory lies wherein the noise sounded the same in gear and in park. Any thoughts?

So I pulled the timing belt, checked both tensioners and the water pump - all seem good. Popped the belt back on and checked with a stethoscope and although I can't pinpoint the location - I now fear the source (i.e. damage) is internal.

Oil was low (especially while up in the air) so Im adding some Marvel Mystery oil to flush it and will drain it to start the autopsy..............

      Hello,

It would be worth examining the engine oil with a microscope, or even have a professional analysis done before assuming that the issue is internal.

If the belt roller bearings are original then it is time to replace them. Sometimes bearings do not make noise except when loaded. I am not certain, but I believe that you can spritz the bearings with a spray lube by removing the dust shields with a screwdriver.

I would also use an oil pressure gauge to establish that the operating clearances are within spec. Let me know if you need the factory service manual oil pressure specifications.

Thanks Goatman - I would be interested in any specs you have. Ive been running Volvos for about 10 years - this was my first. I now also have a 2000 V40, and picked up a 1998 V70 out of Florida after a guy was unable to get the clearance to bring it into Canada. The V70 has been waiting for this one to die!!

Odder still - I just started the car up to warm up the oil and there was no sound. I shut it off in disbelief, started it again and got the noise, shut down to avoid damage, grabbed my stethoscope - started it again and she is purring like a kitten.

Not sure what to make of it - it didn't sound like a starter clutch (please tell me she didn't drive it home with the starter engaged....). But I am running out of ideas. I am going to dump the system and see what Ive got......

          STOP!!!

Just another thought... some of the BB'rs have reported a squealing oil filter valve. Because the noise is just behind the oil pump, all kinds of things have been conjured up.

Replace the oil filter. Then replace the timing belt which you need to do anyway.

Wow - that is an interesting hypothesis - I scan here even when my car isn't broken down and I must have missed that.

There are what appear to be small non-magnetic (aluminum) flakes in the oil. Not many though - and I scanned it pretty good. I also don't think I was low on oil given how much came out - I was just tricked by the front end being up in the air.

I'm going to change the filter now, and maybe add some Duralube. I have the timing belt kit on order, figure worst case scenario I'll keep it for the v70......

    Mike,

Remove the car from service immediately! The engine timing assembly may be damaged or failing. If the camshaft or crankshaft become misaligned by more then a few degrees, severe engine damage will result.

Remove the timing belt and make an inspection before continuing.

My worst fear - I took it off the road as soon as I heard it. I'm leaning towards timing belt tensioner (if it looks like a belt, walks like a belt and talks like a belt.....). Getting the garage ready for a late night as I type this.

Either tensioner roller or water pump are the two logical choices. Remove the Tbelt and check the rollers and pump for play.

Thanks Klaus - I was hoping you'd chime in. Seems like over the years you've seen it all! I've got Volvospeed.com (to refresh my memory) running and the car up in the air right now. I'll be relieved if it is only the waterpump - good chance to do the timing belt anyways as I'm about 75k from the last one.

The Tbelt and tensioner rollers should be changed every 70K miles! Good thing the engine started to sing instead of grumbling :)

            Good luck and happy wrenching,

I know better - but I live in Maine and we don't do much preventative maintenance from November through April :-) Struggling a bit lining up the timing marks - I'll probably wait and it it fresh in the AM.

Take out the spark plugs to make the engine turn easier. Make sure the car is in park or neutral.

I understand, I also don't like working on my cars when the garage floor has ice on it. That is when the $ealer makes money :)
