Rear main seal, $2200 Borton est V70-XC70 1998

Does this seem realistic??? My good friend in MPLS got this quote from Borton Volvo for a rear main seal on her 98 XC.

From Borton: "Customer states : Oil leak present. Car sat for 10 days.(oil noted on driveway) Had to add 3 quarts 2 days ago.
Rear main seal leaking badly. Possible other oil leaks present. Would need to start with real main seal. Clean off oil and have customer monitor.
Est. to replace rear main seal, oil cooler lines and perform oil change $2,200. Customer declines at this time.
job total and parts : $62.50."

Wow, I was told $850 to replace the rear main seal on mine. Find a shop other than the dealer to do it.

Clean the PCV system first, and the leak from the seal may well go away.

I think I was given a quote somewhat less than that for the main seal *and the clutch* from my indy. (I have so far deferred since it doesn't use oil between changes since the Evil $4 Turbocharger "O" ring was replaced.) At 3 quarts, I would be replacing something, maybe the engine, though.

I would not use a Volvo dealer for post-warranty service if I could possibly avoid it.

Ans that doesn't even cover the cost of cleaning out the PCV system, usual cause of a RMS failure.

I don't like Borton's prices for labor, who would? But their work is 1st rate. Call Quality Coaches on 38th street for a comparison, they are usually a few dollars cheaper and also do good work.

Hi,

Removing the transmission is extremely difficult. Without a lift, it would be hellish.

I would rather pull the engine and refit the entire assembly on the stand with new parts.

Viel Glück,
