1998 XC Cat Converter V70-XC70 1998

A buddy at work has a 98 XC that needs a new cat and the stealership wants close to $800 for an OEM cat.

Anyone have a source for a alternative, not crap, cat?

FCP Groton doesn;t carry them & Autohaus never returned my email...

My indy guy just did this and the whole nine yards OEM cat muffler and labor was maybe $800. I was pleasantly surprised. Try your indy -- there must be a lot of dealer markup on the pieces.

We considered a generic cat with the OEM muffler but it only would have saved a couple of hundred bucks -- and I understand there really aren't a whole lot of V70 T5 manuals left. I want to preserve it as well as possible. Somebody else may be crazy enough to want it.

(If klaus is wondering my indy is definitely of the duct tape and JB Weld school and there simply wasn't enough solid metal left to weld the thing.)

I wonder how your buddy determined that the cat was bad. The only way that I know of is to replace both O2 sensors and all of the vacuum lines (fixing any intake manifold leaks) at the same time.

Platinum Maxrix core is loose inside the cat and pieces of said core have exited the rear tailpipe. I checked and the heat shield is still firmly attached.

Klaus, do you know of an alterate source?

BTW Give my best to Cynthia next time you visit her.

I just Googled 'volvo catalytic converter prices' and came up with this:

http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/search/?D=catalytic+converter&Ntt=catalytic+converter&Dx=mode+matchall&Ntk=Main&PN=11921&Ntx=mode+matchall&N=0&Nty=1&VN=4294965896+4294964129+4294967193+4294963351+4294965612&Nr=AND(universal:0)&refType=Tab&refValue=Stock+Replacement

I don't have any reason why this shouldn't work, but it is supposed to be good for 2 years at least? Wherever you go, make sure it is a direct fit and not a general purpose CAT.

Klaus...Went to this link looking for 2000 XC cat...found cat assemblies and just cats. Since I failed emmissions here in Nashville (PO422)and "a leak", I am going to go ahead and change the cat as well as the O2 sensors. The car is pushing 180,000 so it's probably time to replace anyway. Should I buy the entire assembly or just a cat?

This will be my first stab at replacing the cat on this car. Is there anything particular that I should keep in mind while doing the work?

Since the CAT is part of the down pipe, get a can of PBBlaster or some other really good penetrating oil, and soak the bolts. You might want to try multiple doses over a couple of days. It is OK to drive it with the penetrating oil, just smelly :)

You will want to buy a new clamp for the exhaust pipe, those bolts just snap off. And the clamp is cheap, even at the dealer.

Because you are doing the O2 sensors, put them on the CAT before you put the CAT on the car. Work benches are much easier than upside down. Study the wire position below the car.

The heat shield usually rattles. There are plastic nuts holding it on. I used 1 inch, or was it 1.5 inch washers and banged then flat to the frame with a large socket. Then carefully tightened the plastic nuts.

I haven't really gotten under there and look at it all yet, but if I understand what you are say, it's pretty much the normal set up...down pipe - clamp - CAT - clamp - pipe - remainder of exhaust system. I am well acquainted with the sytem on my 240, but the Turbo XC hasn't needed anything but brakes and oil for the past 2 years (fingers crossed)

There are bolts on the down pipe, no clamp.

Just because the 12 year old car doesn't complain, doesn't mean that every thing is happy under the hood. Vacuum lines get old and crack, dealers never check them. Engine mounts fail, dealers don't check them either. Tranny fluid, PS fluid, and antifreeze gets old; dealers never check them. The bevel gear/transfer case oil is not going to last more than 120K, if that long.

Using 87 octane gasoline is 10 cents cheaper in the USA, but leaves deposits in the cylinder heads and exhaust when the knock sensors tell the ECU to enrich the mixture. This adds to the junk collected by the CAT and sensors.

I failed emmissions here in TN and thought my CAT would need replacing. Something that I now have imprinted on my brain, by reading all of Klaus' posts, is "How does so and so know the Cat is bad? Did they take it off and shake it, dump something out of it, etc?" There is no sensor that says your CAT is bad. If the honeycomb stuff is coming out of the tail pipe, don't read any farther. You will just feel bad.

1. CHECK TO SEE THAT ALL VACUUM LINES AND CLAMPS ARE TIGHT OR NOT CRACKED.
2. CLEAN/CHANGE PLUGS WITH VOLVO PLUGS
3. USE, AT A MINIMUM, 91 OCTANE

Hose clamp at MAF connection on my 2000 XC was loose. Screwdriver -$0
Remove positive battery cable. Adjustable wrench - $0
Pull 5 plugs, clean - Small brass bristle brush - $0
1 tank of 93 Octane gas - $40 to $50

No CEL or Service Light...passed emmissions test!!!

Thank you Klaus and Brickboard.

1998 XC - good news for you V70-XC70 1998

Great, glad it worked out. The low octane business comes up time and time again. The engineers designed the engine for 91 octane. For the minimal savings with lower octane gasoline, you end up with poorer performance and a host of other problems. Penny wise and pound foolish.
