I filled my son's 95 850T w.134K at the gas station yesterday and then parked it on our driveway which has is sloped so the rear of the car is on the downhill grade. It was a warm day...maybe 73 degrees. I smelled gas and saw it very slowly dripping from between the filler cap and the tank. When I have the car parked on level ground nothing. When the tank is 2-3 gallons shy of full...nothing. What is going on here? Is it possible that the tank leaks at the seam or from one of the venting tubes?

Check the flexible vent tube that goes from the tank to the top of the filler tube. It may have cracked and then needs to be replaced.

In the meantime, back into your driveway.

Thanks Klaus. What a PIA job this one looks like though. That cracked tube has got to be 2-3 hours to replace with dropping the tank and all. I'm sure an indy repair guy gets a couple of hundred to do it. Another DIY I guess. Does IDP,FCP Groton or eEuroparts carry the tube?

First of all, have you checked the seals for the sending unit and the fuel pump? Those could also be suspect.

You don't want to 'drop' the tank to replace the breather tube. You would need to remove the right rear inside panel to get access to the top of the tube and then remove the lower clamp to remove the tube. No longer having an 850 in my garage limits me to a first hand look, but you could verify.

I believe there was a recall that affected the fuel tank in these cars. The tank can develop a leak where the heat shield is attached. I suppose it could also be realted to where the filler and/or sending unit is attached. I believe there is an access panel under the back seat to see this area, but I am not sure.
