DIY rear brake install gone wrong V70-XC70 2000

My father and I replaced the rear pads and rotors on my 2000 V70 XC today. Used Napa parts. Installation went fine but upon the test drive, terrible grinding noise came from both rear brakes. Took tires off again and the the front pad isn't touching the rotor, the casing that holds the pad is. We can't figure out why there is no space between the casing and the rotor. When we hand tighten the bolts to keep the casing on, there is space but as soon as we tighten it up appropriately, the casing is right up again the rotor. Need advice ASAP please! (I have photos but received 404 Error message on this site when trying to upload.)

The rotors have the wrong back spacing. Return the junk to NAPA and buy from FCPGroton. NAPA sells only China junk and you will never be happy with it. I have a NAPA I can walk to and still buy parts 74 miles away.

They make excellent wine in Napa....having said that their NAPA auto parts are pretty good too. I have no experience with their rotors but I did use their super premium pads on my 940 for a couple hundred thousand miles and they were excellent too. Anyone can sell you the wrong part...though not likely the dealer...they are the best at checking and have the systems in place to match the VIN and the proper part. Did you check the old part side-by-side with the new one to make sure you have the right item.....?

Please let me know what NAPA has that is as good or better than Advance Auto. Prices are sky high for the same junk. High end brake pads, more than the cost of dealer, I checked. Napa has no rotors for that car that are made anywhere but China. Please check it out.

Around here NAPA is a cut-above Advance and the like. Maybe two 'cuts'....and we have a local NAPA store that is quite good. Same counter people and same owners for many years.

Having said that I don't usually use them (napa)for foreign cars. I like to use FCP and Tasca for Volvo, and Volvo original parts whenever I can.

The last full rear brake job I did.....I got a great price for original volvo parts from Tasca....maybe a few percent more than aftermarket OEM from FCP. Volvo original parts are a no-brainer.

Also, did a timing belt change with water pump and everything else up there...and Tasca was same than FCP. The parts from Volvo had some noticeable engineering improvements....and fit perfect. It will be interesting to see what effect Geely has on all this.

We did compare the old rotors to the new rotors and the old rotors measured 3/8" thickness and the new rotors measured 1/2". Even with the severe scoring on them from the test drive, Napa cheerfully did take back the new rotors. They maintain that either the new rotors were defective or that we should have replaced the calipers as well. Long story short, we put new pads and the old rotors back on. For now, this will have to do but when I replace the rotors in a few months, I think I'll call FPC Groton.

        Thanks everyone for your help!

That sounds like a good move Groton will sell you something that fits at least -maybe Brembo rotors with Mintex pads. The debate is still open as the whether, OEM are the only type that won;t squeal. I've managed to keep mine quiet.
Is it possible that you failed to compress the piston inside the caliper? You can wedge the handle of a channel lock in there and push. You are pushing against the fluid so it takes force and you might loosen the cap on the reservoir. Sorry you have to do it twice, but your saving $$ and it'll be easier the second time

Everything but the puzzling 'clearance' issue appeared to be right and correct, so in frustration we reinstalled the old rotors (which really weren't that bad) against the new pads. Of course, the old 'genuine Volvo' rotors lined up perfectly centered in the caliper's inspection port and all worked normally on the test drive. Returned the scored rotors to NAPA with a 'take no prisoners' attitude and they provided a no-questions-asked full refund. I'm guessing that they were not the correct part--from now on,FCP Groton all the way, baby !

I've only done these once before and I seem to remember problems installing the anti-rattle clip, and that it screws up everything if you put it in wrong. Or even worse, if you forget to put it on. (Believe it or not, I did that.) It has to be something simple like that if you're having the same problem on both sides.

And make sure you cleaned out the groove in the caliper bracket and greased it. Top and bottom....real important.

Always a good idea to do one side at a time so you can look at the un-started side to make sure things go together nicely. It will be interesting to see what you find out to be the problem. Make sure and post back when you get it fixed.
