Recall on ABS ECU 850 96

Everyone Read

Service Bulletin 86

I usually take my car to an independent mechanic. Woodbridge Volvo Motorcars in Woodbridge VA. 7034949215 Ask for Sheldon or Robert. I had it in there for the ABS and TRACS lights being on. The check engine light was on as well. From diagnosing the problem it was determined that the right rear wheel sensor was causing all 3 lights to pop on. THe check engine light was of course not intermittent. But the TRACS and ABS lights were intermittent. After volvo required that my VIN # be submitted in order purchase the sensor, I became suspect of Volvo's tracking of VIN's with these problems. After waiting a few days for the part to arrive, it was installed to no avail. The lighs were still on and the check engine light was triggered by the right rear wheel sensor again. At this point we checked the wiring from the sensors to above the gas tank. There is a distrubution switch (EBD) there and figured that it could be that. Nope. Anyway after an exhaustive search of the wiring no problems were found. A couple days later, I received in the mail a recall for the ABS ECU, the wiring harness, and the EBD (brake distribution switch). Service Bulletin 86 For this I had to take it in to the dealership. The dealership stated that they had replaced many ABS ECU and never had there been any recall. They disbeleived me at first. Then when I walked in and handed them the Service Bulletin they started to beleive me. It is now in the shop having the work done. I am very suspect of VOLVO. I thought it was funny that just to get a wheel sensor I had to submit my VIN #. What BS. Then I happened to receive a recall in the mail. HMMM. Everyone may want to find out if they apply to the recall. I am also unhappy with FJORD's policies. I am also unhappy with RYDELL driving a Ford Mondeo after Volvo was kicked out. Talk about some BS Ford Politics. "Lets take out the Volvo and put Rydell in a Ford to make Ford seem better"

Re: Recall on ABS ECU 850 96

Hi:

We have the same problem as you had.

Is there any way you could send us that bulletin?

I would apreciate it a lot.

Thanks,

Maurice.

Re: Recall on ABS ECU 850 96 R

Hello,

I am having the same problem. Last time when I took my volvo in for service I have the rep to check to see if all the recalls have been done on my volvo. He checked and said my volvo is up-to-date and when I asked him about the ABS ECU issue he said I will have to pay to have it checked.

To cut the whole story short, I would greatly appreciate if you could email me the service bulletin and I will take it to my dealership too.

Re: Recall on ABS ECU 850 96

BTW,

The parts hold which required release of your wheel speed sensor is done so the tech hotline can verify that the part is not being installed under warranty when it needs a service campaign or other checks/repairs.

If it is customer pay work the release of part is automatic.

There were lots of wheel sensors being changed when the problem was not the sensor but connector problems or other faults not remedied by changing the part.

Parts holds are done when parts are being changed and the parts are found to be okay when returned and tested per normal warranty procedure.

Re: Recall on ABS ECU 850 96

The problem is that you are calling it a recall and the ABS SERVICE CAMPAIGN could not be found when they went looking for a RECALL in the recall listings.

A service campaign and a recall are as different as a fish and a cow.

The ABS notification you got was for a service campaign, not a legally required or done in advance of an ineveitably going to be mandated recall.

The EBD switches were leaking and brake fluid can travel up the harness and reach the ABS ECU. If the brake fluid was in evidence at the ECU as checked with a Q-tip swabbing of the connector area, then an ABS ECU was replaced. If the brake fluid was found in EBD sw. connector but not in ABS ECU connector, then a harness end connector repair kit was installed.

If the EBD sw. is in the date code range but no fluid is found anywhere, then the switch is replaced, that'a all.

Re: Recall on ABS ECU 850 96

Shouln't any leak in the brake system warrant a safety recall? I have a 96 and I am very concerned about a possible brake fluid leak.

Re: Recall on ABS ECU 850 96

The leak, if it does occur, is a very small leak. There is a sensor for low brake fluid and it turns on the BRAKE light on inst cluster.

If you continue to drive the car for the weeks and weeks it would take after the light comes on before the brakes would lose enough fluid to cause a problem then you deserve brake failure.

My recollection is that if your car falls in the VIN range for this action you were mailed a letter.

Re: Recall on ABS ECU 850 96

Very true. Any dealership could check the switch, campaign info out too. If anyone here has any questions about it, I'd advise calling your dealership as the info about it is not listed online or elsewhere publically available.

I also don't believe the the leaking brake fluid into the switch (a very rare occurance in my experience btw) ever caused an ABS fault code or any others for that matter (definately NOT a check engine light). I think that the original poster here had different problems and that it wasn't handled (diagnosed) correctly.

'96 850s (only) had a unique ABS wiring situation that any good dealer tech should know about (know the cure) and I'm not going to print the details here as it's a situation that's best handled at the dealerships. If you own a '96 850 with an ABS light coming on, call your dealership for an appointment as they can fix it BUT if it's past the 4/50 warranty period, it won't be repaired for free.

Re: Recall on ABS ECU 850 96

Did the mail say a safety recall and actually use the word

"recall"? Service bulletins are not, technically, recalls

(which may be one of the things that irked Shemp).

Recalls are few but there are dozens and dozens of service

bulletins. Also, service bulletins might list a range of

VIN that they apply to which is why someone would need the

VIN if they suspected service bulletin 86 applied (does it

list a range of VINs -- of so, might be helpful for others

to know the range if you can post it).

Glad you got it fixed -- I wish service bulletins were publicly

available (but the dealer service departments would be over run).

Simply pure BS! 850 96

Unfortunately ALL of your facts are wrong. Recall 86 has nothing to do with an ABS problem, nor will or can a rear ABS sensor cause a "check engine" light. To top it off, Ford has nothing to do with any of it either.

Re: Simply pure BS! 850 96

It's actually a "campaign" 86, not a recall and is mostly related at a possible problem of brake fluid leaking into the EBD switch.

Re: Simply pure BS! 850 96

SHEMP,

Unfortunately you do not know anything. I have the Service Bulletin in front of me and it does list the ABS ECU and the EBD switch. And I can verify that the right rear wheel sensor is throwing a fault code triggering the engine light. To top it off Ford has everything to do with it. They own Volvo

And tell me "Why do you think Ford pulled Volvo out of BTCC"

OK, then fix the car and have a nice day :) Why whine about it here?

Volvo racing 850 96

Volvo put their racing budget where and when it did good.

The 850's were run to bolster the image transformation that the 850 was designed to accomplish.

The switch to 40 series was done when that car didn't initially do as well as planned and once the 40 series sales in the critical UK market improved there was no need to spend any more money.

The money (less of it) is now going to the JTCC series in northern Europe.

Ford may have had some imapct as effectively two of their models would have gone head-to-head. My recollection is that the BTCC involvement was canned before the FOMOCO purchase deal.

YOU must work for VOLVO Advertising 850 96

Why are you such a dick. I am merely helping others who have the same expensive problem solve it. Leave me alone. Do you work for VOLVO

Re: YOU must work for VOLVO Advertising 850 96

Still wrong. The reason I piped in was because mostly everything you said was incorrect and that being the case, you're not helping anyone here.

If you're right, then I assume the car is now fixed (IE: no ABS/Tracs or check engine lights) right?

Oh by the way ,as far as volvo getting "kicked out " of the BTCC

my understanding was that Tom Wakensha Racing moved on to F1 and

decided to drop the volvo program.
