Goopy oil on dipstick V70-XC70

Since last winter, I've noticed when I check the oil that the dipstick comes out with goopy, light brown oil stuck to it. The oil-goop also looks 'aerated' as it appears to have bubbles inside.

I mentioned this to the dealer at the 180K mile check up and they said it is caused by a new winter-weight 10W-30 oil that they are using. I am not buying that story.

Can anyone guess what's going on? The car has been losing about a quart of oil every couple months (about 300 - 500 miles of light use) for the past 15K miles. But this is a new issue.

Thanks in advance.

You have an engine full of sludge. 10W30 is not a 'winter' oil and you should get in the habit of changing your own rather than the dealer's cheap stuff. Your engine would really like 5W30 synthetic.

I suggest taking the car for an hour's drive, at least, and get the engine nice and warm. Spend the last 10-15 minutes in 2nd or 3rd gear to get the oil hot. Remember, if you have a turbo there is an oil cooler in the radiator so the oil will not get too hot during spirited driving. Well, most Americans do not know what spirited driving is. They drive the 3-5 miles to the store, never letting the oil get hot enough to burn off impurities.

After your drive, wait a couple of minutes and check the dipstick again.

Do what Klaus says and switch to synthetic when warm. Get 2 or 3 oil changes in a more frequent interval (maybe one at 1000mi and one at 2000mi?). The stuff does a lot of cleaning on its own. Then see if the problem goes away and there isn't something more serious. I had lots of varnish on the dipstick when I got my new/used 850 @ 110K mi Switching to synth oil took care of it. Also peeking in at the camshafts in the filler hole showed crud gone. Good luck
