I Like 850s 850

OK, so I have owned four Volvos now. Had 93 940 wagon...great car.Sold it. A 98 V90...maybe the best car I ever owned.Sold it. Still have a 94 940 NA for my daughter it is a tank that just keeps running perfectly. Everything works and it has the best seat heaters you would ever want in a car. I added a 95 850T just before Christmas 09 and it had some initial issues:fuel pump, oil cooler lines, leaking distributor seal, front struts and spring seats, heater core and turbo hoses.

I did the heater core myself and turbo hoses myself. Got a good price on the struts from Sears and had the other items taken care of by my Volvo indy. I paid $2500 for the car and put about $1800 into it. It has 134K...I know it will be due for a timing belt job in a few months. But I have to say, it is a great driving car. It's for my son, but I would trade in heartbeat for my 2000 9-5 Saab Gary Fisher wagon...which is a good car as well, but quite different from the Volvos!
All in all, I had my doubts about the 850 in the beginning, but it is rock solid with the punchlist items squared away. It is a smooth driver, burns no oil to speak of, gets out of it's own way in a hurry on the cheapest gas I can put in it. Everything works including the antenna after 134K...impressive. Oh and a big shout out of thanks to you guys here on BB for the advice and help. Makes owning this baby fun.
Guess I have to give it back to my kid now!

    Oh yeah 850

Not too many cars out there are as much fun to drive as a well maintained 850! Especially at todays prices!

Almost as much fun as my old BMW 2002...:)

    Hear Hear 850

I had a '95 854T. That was one fine car. The tranny is a littly clunky, but otherwise it was fun to own and drive.

There are several maintenance items, as you have verified.

I bought mine at 139K miles, and sold it at 185K after three wonderful years. I now have a '98 Turbo, and I have to say I liked the styling of the 850 better.

Enjoy that car! Mine served me well.

    Aren't they great?

They're a lot of work, but I think they're worth it every time you climb in the drivers seat.

My dad randomly steals my S70 every time I go home without explanation, and leaves the keys to his Jeep on the table. Which, of course, never has gas in it either =)

They are some work JAb...but not more or less then many other cars out there and for the money that they can be had now, they are an excellent choice for younger drivers. I feel much better knowing my 18 year old boy is behind the wheel of that 95 850 then if he were in a newer Civic, or Elantra. Some knucklehead texting while driving their Expedition T-bones him in that 850 and I'm confident he has a chance. Not so with the others.

Please read the owner's manual before your son does. There is a section in there about limiting top speed or a speed warning. It could even be in the radio section. I had threatened to do that with my daughter, but anything over 55 was fast for her, besides the fact that I loved to drive it.
