no power transfer 850 1993

I got the son's 850 started after replacing the alt. The car has been sitting for over a year and it runs and revs fine in (P) and (N) but there isn't any aceleration in drive. The brakes, surprisingly enough aren't frozen.
I am thinking clogged cat or a tranny issue. I have no history of the car and am a newbie to FWD volvos.
Thanks, Philvo

    Hello,

Does the car move, or is it just slow?

it is slow, it took a bit of effort to get up to 50 mph.If I stomp on the gas the trans. kicks down and the engine revs up but no power.

        Philvo,

What is the transmission fluid level? The dipstick is near the air cleaner box.

Check the level while the engine is running.

Not holding a charge could be a dead battery cell. Check the voltage from the alternator, it should be about 14.5V

As to the no torque, it usually means that you are not getting enough air or very little spark energy. In either case, you are flooding the cylinders with an open throttle and the engine boggs down. The tranny kickdown is good, it is doing what it should.

Check the air hose from the throttle body back to the air cleaner for cracks or loose fit.

A clogged CAT is a possibility but hard to diagnose. Sometimes banging on it with your fist, when it is cold of course, will generate noise that doesn't sound right.
