1st time brake job sort of S70

I am doing a brake job and have to probably replace the front rotors. This would be the 2nd front pad replacement. I have oem pads and will have to order rotors. But my big question is how to get the front rotors off? Anyone have experience?
I would assume that they might be rusty and i have to use some penetrating oil?
From reading the volvospeed website it kind of looks like the rotor is held on by the one little pin that is sticking out? am i wrong? Anyways never did this before.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Correct, the locating pin holds the rotor on until the lug bolts take over the job.

Replacing rotors can be easy or hard, depending on the amount of rust gluing things together. My passenger side almost fell off, the driver's side required a hammer. You should see the marks on the rotor from beating on it!

Before you put the new rotor on, use a wire brush and clean the surface of dirt and rust. Then I put on a thin layer of brake grease to help keep the rust from coming back. Others have used anti-sieze.

Clean the slide pins of any black and brake grease again.

Hint: New rotors need to be cleaned with brake cleaner. Lay the rotor on a newspaper, outside facing down. Clean it nicely. Carefully pick it up and slide it on the car, put in the locating pin. Now, clean the outside face.

Thank you for your post. That was very helpful. I have read some of your posts in the past. You are very knowledgeable.

Can i ask you what tips you might give me for taking the rotor off if rusted?
Even taps all around the rotor? What type and kind of hammer should i use?

        LOL
I just used a regular 1 lb hammer around the backside of the rotor until it came loose.

I have a brake question maybe someone can answer?

Well i measured the pad on the rears and i have about 1/4 inch left of less. I figure i should replace them and do the front a bit later as i have more on those.

I read that the rear are easier then the front? Well i have 106,000 miles and was reading that i should replace the front rotors after 2 pad changes and i am there now. But the rear disc has never been replaced. I read somewhere they dont need to be replaced until the second pad change? Is that true?

          So for the rear brakes:

I have to knock the pins out slowly so the spring comes out....i never looked at the rear brakes before...so do i knock them out with a punch from the front or from the back? When i am facing the wheel i call that the front orientation.

I got this from volvospeed:( the instructions are for a XC and i dont have a XC but they are probably the same as S70 GLT?)

After the hold down spring on the front of the caliper is off, move around to the back and remove the rubber caps for the slide pins. (Green arrows) Once the rubber caps are off a hex head socket will get the slide pins out. After the slide pins are out pull the caliper off and remove the old pads.

This sounds like i knock the pins out slowly from the front and go to the back to remove the rubber caps? Then it says to use a hex head socket to get out the slide pins? i use it to pop the pins out by pushing by hand right?

Then i assume once the pads are back in you can easily put the hold down spring in place and put one of the pins in then try to punch the last pin in to finish?
Any trick to putting the last pin in?

Also are there any other better pictures of the rear brake job? The images on volvospeed are kind of hard to see detail.

          Andrew

The front and rear calipers are not the same.

            For the front:

Take the rubber cover off the slide pins. Depending on the caliper type, you will need a hex or torx to unscrew the slide pins. After they are completely unscrewed, they pull out so that you can clean them and regrease them.

Then unbolt and remove the caliper.

Pull out the outside brake pad. Then pull off the inside brake pad which has 3 spring clips that hold it on to the piston.

Push the piston back into the caliper. I use a pair of channel lock pliers to do that.

Put the new pads in and reassemble the claipers, put the clean slide pins back and you are done.

            The rear brakes:

If you have the old style calipers, they will have 2 pins that hold a spring plate that keeps the pads in place. The pins look like nails that go through the caliper. They get punched out with a hammer and punch, and hammered back in place.

              Klaus,
Thank you for responding so quickly. Its sunny out and i am anxious to do this brake job today!

I think i have the old style calipers? S70 GLT 1999.... As i pull off the tire and see the face of the braking system do i punch out the pins on this so called outside or come around from the inside? back behind the the face to punch out the pins?

Oh, and if i want to post pictures here how do i do that?

              Andrew

you tap them from the outside in. You should see two holes on the outer part of the caliper. Use a punch to GENTLY tap out the pins. Take out the spring contraptions and the pads slide out. Installation is the reverse. Take it slow on the first side, once you have it, you'll see how easy it is.

The pins that hold the spring clip on can only be punched out in one direction. We are talking about the rears, correct? The spring clip looks like a cross?

Pictures here are tough and need to be small. You can show a link to pictures on other web sites, we are happy to go there and look.
