Headlight Assembly on my new 98 XC 70 Wagon Bumper cover off to replace? V70-XC70

Well, after years of 240s, 740s and 850s, I made into the land of V70s! Finally! Picked up a beautiful 98 V70 XC wagon last for 1500 - a real steal.

I am replacing the headlight assemblies due to the usual hole in the lenses deal. I have done this on 850s, but on the v70 xc does the bumper cover have to be removed to allow the headlamp assembly to come out?

I have done this on both a 98 V70 AWD and a 98 S70 FWD and neither required removing the bumper cover.

Congrats on the new acquisition! I hope it works out well for you.

Change the trans fluid and bevel gear fluid STRAIGHT away, and then do it again in a few months.

Change your coolant and brake fluid and PS fluid ASAP.

Thanks! This will save me time on Saturday! I am having issues with very dim headlights, so I will check grounds at the same time too! Bought two new halogen bulbs for the new FCP Groton lamp assemblies.

The car goes in tomorrow for a trans flush and fuel filter - will add bevel gear and differential gear oil too!

It's due for a timing belt, tensioner, and water pump too. Last t-belt at 86600 - now 158k so I am going for it with tax money!

This one promises to be good car for the dough - I got a bargain and sold my 96 850 wagon within two hours of purchasing this one. That never happens!

The driver's side headlamp assembly is easiest, do it first.
The right side has the hood latch in the way of one of the 10mm bolts. Scribe the location of the bolts on the latch, then remove it. Realign it using the scribe marks.

Watch out for the wiper holder on the bottom of the housing.

Next time, get Ecode lenses for superior lighting.

        These engines like synthetic oil.

Thanks for the tip Klaus! Might use that Walmart synthetic that I have used in the past! Just changed oil this week, so next time. Never had a turbo before - this is uncharted territory. So far, it runs great and is an improvement over my 96 beater wagon that still went from A to B every day.

Since I got more out of the 850 than I paid for 98 XC I am already ahead on this one.

Crossing my fingers on no timing belt surprise until I get my tax refund and will rest easy after accomplishing that needed task!
