Trying to buy, want service history on 2 yr old Volvo C70 1999

Hi everyone,

We'll be visiting a Volvo dealer, really soon, with the idea of looking for a one to three year Volvo, in cabernet red, for my wife; with the idea of getting one that came off lease, with all proper services done. Does anyone know whether it could be possible to get- at the moment of sale- all actual repair orders for the car in addition to this, and a photocopy of the title at the moment we purchase the car (before change of title papers are sent to the DMV) with the idea of - yes, I guess you could say, invading the former owner's privacy and asking him where the car was taken (as a backup way to get repair orders)

Can this be done?

Secondly, if the dealer doesn't have one in stock, could we engage the dealer's help in finding a car like this, even to the extent of placing the "order" with the dealer's buyer who could go to a Volvo of NA auction and pick up the car we wanted at the auction, then sell it to us?

Anyone?

Thanks

Jim

Re: Trying to buy, want service history on 2 yr old Volvo C70 1999

It baffles me why the dealers do not have a database listing cars that are coming off lease in a wide area. They have thier own but do not seem to be able to look state-wide or area wide. I searched for a C70 also with no luck, due to lack of data.

There must be no economic reason to share off-lease infornmation.

I did find a car thru one dealer, but the dealer who had it would

not give it up because "my dealer" did not have anything to trade.

They would not tell me who it was!

If I "bought" my leased car from VF before the lease was up, one dealer would turn it over to a new owner for $100 and only one sales tax.

I would not have to take possession and pay the tax again.

Leasing offers a dealer a lot of opportunities to get more money.

Lease inception fee.

Lease termination fee. ($295)

$100 if you bring in a buyer.

And so on.

Rich

A friend of the family that owns a Chevrolet/Oldsmobile dealership has said that he doesn't cut deals on used cars, because that's where the money is. With new cars, you can always take a skinny deal, and order another one exactly the same.

You are entitled to request anything as a condition of the sale. If the dealer does not want to release the information, they can decide whether they want to lose the sale.

As far as "invading the owner's privacy", personally, I would have no problem with getting a phone call from a stranger who wants to know the real story on a car that I used to own. You can always take the vehicle ID number to the Dept of Motor Vehicles to see what is on file. In some states they may not give it to you. In California, I think you can only get it if the vehicle is being offered for sale.

Re: Trying to buy, want service history on 2 yr old Volvo C70 1999

"Cabernet Red"??? Why not "merlot red"??? Boy, I have heard various names for the Venetian Red Metallic but nothing like that!

I assume that you mean Venetian Red Metallic but that color was not available in the C70s in MY1998 and in very limited numbers in MY1999. So, you are going to have a pretty hard time finding one.

Now, any Volvo Retailer who has a pre-owned car department that respects itself, should be able to "hook-up" with their buyer and they can look for what you want in a "dealer-only" Volvo auction. But remember, you place an order, you will be asked to put down a deposit (anywhere from $500 to $1000) which will not be refundable should you not like the way the car looks when it is brough to the dealership.

As far as you "invading the previous owner's privacy"...why would you want to do this? Would you like the same to happen to you? And if you wold, there are people out there that would feel kinda nervous knowing that someone else (with the Retailer's help, mind you) "tracked them down"...I would just get the service history if I were you and would refrain from "invading someone's privacy". What I do with our customer's, when they have a similar request, I tell them "let me contact the previous owner and I will give them YOUR name and telephone number. If they want to get in touch with you, I am sure they will".

Good luck with your search.

Yannis
