Stereo/speakers 850 1995

So I'm now preparing to replace my stereo in the Wagon. 95 850 GLT, factory stereo installed with cd changer.

I'm not concerned with the head unit, seems pretty straightforward.

The speakers, I'm not sure. I looked at the door speakers, and they look like 5.25 inch speakers. Crutchfield website says they are 4 inch. Anyone know for sure? I even measured the actual factory speaker, 5.25 inches around the outside of the woofer, hmmmmm...

Also, what speakers can I put in the rear pillars? The wires are there, no speakers installed. I'm not expecting any great sound from back there, but there will be plenty of power available, and speakers are cheap enough, so why not.

All input welcome and appreciated. Haven't ordered anything yet. Thanks, Greg.

I just did this on a95 850T that I bought for my son.I can tell you from direct experience that Crutchfield is just plain wrong about the front door speakers and they should correct their system. The front door speakers in your car are 5.25". I followed the Crutchfield recommendation and ordered 4" speakers for the front. It was too much of a hassle to ship them back, so I made some modifications with sheet metal and installed the 4" ones. Just get 5.25" and do it right the first time.
You can get a bit more info. on the harness kit and parts I bought here:http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/volvo/1401973/850/aftermarket_stereo_installation_95_850t.html

I got the harness and dash kit both from Amazon. It was fairly inexpensive and wiring the new head unit in and putting it in place took about 30 minutes tops.
You should get two(2) packages of butt connectors from Radio Shack for wiring the harness.

I bought replacement speakers from Parts Express:http://www.parts-express.com/wizards/searchResults.cfm?srchExt=CAT&srchCat=42

Most that you find there are far better then the OEM for under $30/pair.

Good luck. It's an easy upgrade.

I hope you get lots of responses here on this board, but I did want to point out that Volvospeed has a section of their forum dedicated to just this type of thing:

The stereo is an easy flip.

IIRC the front and rear doors on the 850 are both 5 1/4. you need to drill new holes or use only 2 or 3 or the holes on the door for the front. Thats what I did, works ok with no problems. I just used cheap speakers for my moms wagon, so sealing the speaker to the door wasnt an issue.

Good luck
