I Screwed Up My Antenna 850 1993

Hello again lads.

For the last couple years, I've been spraying the antenna with WD40 periodically when the antenna only went half way up when turning on the radio or starting the car.

I was pulling up on the tip to get it to extend fully during the motorized process. Now it seems I pulled little too hard and busted something. I used a clamp style paper clip to keep the antenna up and bring in a static free AM signal, but the FM band is dead.

I'm willing to live with the antenna up all the time, but I miss my FM.

Anybody have an idea what I can do to receive both AM and FM without repairing the whole motorized system? The motor shuts down after maybe 15-20 seconds or so when turning off the car.

Is the only option a complete repair, or replacement?

Thanks!

Yes, Klaus is right that it's a very inexpensive and easy fix.
You may very well find that if some of the toothed plastic 'ribbon' is retained, the unit will still take up the new ribbon and correctly operate after several runs.
I installed a new antenna mast and found it as inconsistently operating to fully closed. If I'm not mistaken some of the toothed ribbon was retained.
I was dreading the essentially easy but 'time wasting' exercise of opening the unit.
After a couple days and a dozen up/down cycles the mast works perfectly.
And if it doesn't...just open up the unit and take out the retained ribbon.

The motor is still good, just need to replace the mast. Order a new mast for around $20.

You probably broke off a piece of the plastic ribbon that is pulled/pushed by the motor. Inspection of the end of the ribbon will confirm that, and if so, you might have to take the motor assembly apart to get the rest of the plastic out before installing the new mast.

      Thanks for the response.

I think I'm getting the picture on how the antenna operates. The repair sounds easy enough, but what about the FM reception? Since the ribbon is plastic, how do you account for the FM band failing?

When I broke the ribbon, did I also take out the actual connection to the radio?

      Thanks!

The mast itself is probably not touching all of the way up. The reception has nothing to do with the plastic. When you get a new mast and the FM still doesn't work, start another post.
