99 S70 AWD Auto Transmission Fluid

Need to replace the automatic transmission fluid on the 99 S&0 and am reading a lot of different fluid requirements ranging from Dextron II, Dextron III or Toyota 3309????.

Can anyone tell me what the correct fluid is for the flush?

Thank you in advance.

Oliver

A 4 speed box uses DexIII. A 5 speed uses 3309.

Both will need at least 10 quarts for a good flush.

careful with this one jablackburn,

there was a commenter on here a while ago that had a pretty convincing argument that some 99s & 00s were given the 5-speed auto which does in fact take 3309.

I think the proper delineation comes from which model of transmission you have, which can be determined by how many gears the trans has.

The 4-speed auto takes DEXRON III (synthetic is preferred).

The 5-speed auto takes 3309 (this should only come as synthetic).

As far as I know, all 99's had the 4-speed. All 2000 XCs, GLT, and T5's had the 4-speed as well, and only the S70 base and N/A SE models were given the 5-speed.

The 3309 Toyota & Volvo fluid is actually not a full synthetic fluid like the Mobil I use in my car - just a different formula than Dex-III.

I stand corrected. You seem to have good knowledge of which cars had which trans - maybe it was you I was thinking of who provided the info on certain cars having the 5-speed earlier than 2001 (when the 5-speed became more prevalent)? Looks like I was confused thinking the 5-speed had been shipped with some 99s when in reality it didn't show up until 00s.

I just wanted to make sure we all knew the transmission has more to do with it than the MY.

I did a quick search to verify for myself and it seems you're right that the 3309 fluid is not a fully synthetic spec at all. I don't know why I even though that now that I actually did some reading on it.

Just curious - does anyone know of a fully synthetic fluid that can be used in place of 3309?

It may have been me, I honestly don't remember =). The later year differences are hard to keep track of though! Everything before that was the same. A 99 had the 4-speed with "adaptive learning mode" controlled by the electronic throttle where the car would learn your driving style instead of having the S/E switches the earlier Volvos had. After 2000, they dumped the outdated 4-speed to replace it with the ridiculously fragile 5-speed in all the cars.

I use this fluid in my 98:
Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF

Which is a fully synthetic fluid that says it's compatible with JWS 3309 as well. I haven't TRIED it in one of those transmissions myself, but I am happy with the results from my car, and have heard of others using it in their 5-speeds with good results.

My last flush I did with 7 qts of cheap Advance Auto store-brand Dex-III, and the final 5 ones ran through the expensive Mobil fluid and filled it with the Mobil. Random ratio, but that's all the store had of the Mobil fluid, and it's expensive. I'm not sure what % of what is in there, but I'd think it's mostly the Mobil. I will be doing another flush once spring gets around and all this stupid snow gets off the ground (which could well be June with the amount we keep having dumped on us).
