Hello again lads,

The front right spring seat is shot and making a lot of racket, so I'm looking to purchase struts and any parts I need to do both sides. So what do I need besides the struts and spring seats? Do I need strut mounts? How about the strut dust boot, or strut bump stop?

    If you're doing the struts anyway, you may as well buy the new mounts to save yourself the effort of having one break later (it does happen). Get the spring seat for the other side while you're at it. The rest you should be able to use the existing parts with no problems.

    I highly suggest getting the XC90 SUV spring seats instead of the 850 ones. You'll never have to deal with them breaking again, and they're only like $5 more.

    Check out your control arms & bushings, and tie rods as well.

      Thanks for the response. Ordered the parts from FCP Groton a couple days ago. Any idea how much time it should take my mechanic to install the struts, mounts and spring seats on both sides? I'd like to be sure on the cost.

        Shouldn't really be more than 2 1/2-3 hours, and then the alignment fee of course.

            No problem - out of curiosity, what struts did you buy? I'm looking to replace the ones on my S70 in a couple of months.

              Well, since the roads here in Florida are in good condition, I didn't need anything heavy duty so I went ahead and got the 1993-1997 Volvo 850 Sachs OEM struts. The price was right ($105.00). Since the car is 17 years old now, and although it's only got 115,000 miles on it, I'm trying to keep my maintenance costs reasonable.

              I made my order over the phone. The salesperson wanted to steer me towards a kit that included the mounts and springs seats, but after doing some math, I discovered it was cheaper to order the parts individually as priced on their web site. So he gave me the "kit" at my new price.
