rear door lock V70-XC70 1998

The left rear door will lock with the remote and with the driver switch, but it will not unlock. I talked to the IPD representative and he said that I have to diagnose it.

Well I have no idea what I am looking at. I did check the Volvospeed v70 latch job pictures, but I really do not want to open the door panel without knowing more. Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, there is no way to know further what's going on without taking the door panel off and having a look around.

If your door still locks & unlocks fine by pulling the lock up & down, just doesn't unlock with the button, then most likely your problem is with the evil red lever shown in the pictures on the Volvospeed write-up. They all break at some point or another - it is just not a good design.

Thanks for the help. You are saying I need to break eggs in order to make souffle. Well I will have to take the panel off and look for the evil red lever.

Does that red lever come as part of the rear door lock actuator?

If you read the entire repair procedure and review the images on Bay 13 ...

        http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/v70latch1.php
(be sure to see page two of the procedure)

... you will see that the Red Evil Plastic Lever is an internal component of the door lock mechanism. The procedure shows how to repair the REPL, but I can see from your replies that this is not an option for you. If your lock mechanism has failed and requires replacement, the Bay 13 procedure will work for you. It looks worse in text and images than it is when you actually do it.

A new lock for my right front door cost $118 from the dealer in 2005.

The REPL typically fails when you try to open the lock with the remote or from the master panel at the driver's seat at the same time that someone is trying to open the door with the handle. Do you recall such an event?

        Good Luck

Thank you for taking the time to spell it out for me.

Without opening the panel, your explanation helped me to figure out that it is the REPL. I did reread the latch procedure and I did print it, including page two. But for me, the REPL repair will have to wait until warmer weather.

Unfortunately, I do not recall the event, but I am glad to know how to prevent failure of the other REPL. My family has the bad habit of working the handles to provoke the person with the keys to open their door. I am sure this repair will cure us all.

The REAL fun will be removing the lock mechanism from the door.

Like all of us who have done it, you will swear that it cannot fit through the available opening and that Volvo must have built the car around it.

Trust us; it can be removed. Your patience will be rewarded.
