Interesting Oil Leak - Any Ideas? 850 1996

High Res Pictures (link below) of my 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo Sedan with 117,000 miles on it. I have noticed some interesting oil leaks around my engine. I don't understand how the oil can be coming from the top of the engine. I have gotten underneath the car and checked the turbo return seal (read it fails alot - IPD has a kit for it) but it doesn't seem to be leaking from there. Any information or knoweldge about this would be greatly appreciated. HIGH RES PICTURES HERE: http://volvobug.com/850leak.aspx

Have you checked the distributor cam seal?

Have not checked that, wasn't aware there was a seal under the distributor. Thanks for the info. Can the leaks underneath be the turbo oil line?

The turbo return line is a hard one to isolate, as it usually covers EVERYTHING near the turbo area in oil. However, if that line is not completely dry, it probably is indeed leaking.

Photobucket is being a pain at the moment, but check out the pictures in this post:

I believe mine is the 5th one down.

There appears to be more than 1 leak. Is the bottom air guide/splash guard still installed? Without it, the intercooler weep hole can blow oil on the passenger side of the engine while you have the turbo engaged.

Check the exhaust cam on the driver's side, see if any oil is leaking from there. Even a little bit can be a lot after a few weeks. It also says that the crankcase pressure is too high, which means clean off the PCT nipple and start thinking about replacing the oil speparator and lines.

The leak on top of the engine is most likely the oil filler gasket, but, as mentioned already, don't replace it until you know the crankcase pressure is proper.

Take the Volvo spark plug cover thing off and have a look around there. If it's covered in oil, you probably need a new oil filler cap gasket. Oil will leak out of there and run down the sides of the engine.

Before you do that though, do you have excess pressure in the PCV system? Pull out the oil dipstick once the car is warmed up and see if you're getting smoke puffing out. If you do, don't replace that gasket until you have a chance to clean the system.

About 2 months ago, I completely replaced the entire PCV system (kit from FCP Groton) including completely cleaning out the PTC sensor that is attached to the accordion air intake hose after the air filter box. I have also replaced that oil cap seal with one purchased straight from a Volvo dealer here in CT. Theoretically I should have no more PCV pressure built up I would hope?

Yes the lower air guide/ splash guard is still in place and the well filled up. I cleaned it out the last time I was under there. PTC is completely cleaned out when I replaced the entire PCV system 2 months ago.
