Hey guys,
my 99 V70 was feeling down the past few days I guess.
The engine temperature wouldn't reach normal. The needle would slowly go up after about 2 miles then it would stay below normal. Then eventually go to normal after about 15 minutes of driving. Then go down. I was thinking thermostat? My heat was cool, and my a/c compressor was not coming on. Then yesterday, the temperature reached normal after about a mile like it used to, the heat was hot and the a/c worked again. what?! (the ECC lights did blink in the morning a few days ago, related?)
any ideas about what happened?

Update
Bought the complete housing from Auto Parts Warehouse online, very happy with the shipping and prices. Had the housing installed for a small price, and..well I've got heat and the car finally warms up!
Gas mileage is way up as well!

Tried to change it today. The bolt was so damn stuck so I tried hard to get it out, and the whole housing cracked. Found one from a 2000 s70, non turbo-like mine, it'll fit right? How should I go about changing this stupid thing?

Ouch! So I did a quick search and found this:

Perhaps a small wrench, bent to fit?

Got any PB Blaster? Those T40 screws are tough to break loose. I wound up puttting all of my weight on top of the socket and then banging the handle to get it to move. Don't strip the top of the screw, you don't want to have to drill out the screw.

It's no use getting the cover off now, I need to replace the actual stupid housing. It looks tough to get the bottom bolt out. Theres two at the top (easily removed) and one at the bottom buried.

Your thermostat is failing. Drain out a little antifreeze, and replace it with OEM. If you buy a cheap one, expect it to fail in the closed position and have an overheated engine.
The ECC blinking lights indicates an error, probably the cabin temp sensor in the dash being dirty. Override the ECC by sliding the blower speed to higher and the vents off of auto. Leave the temp setting alone.

Thanks guys,
I plan on doing the thermostat today. If I cant find a long T40 screwdriver, then, tomorrow I will. Do I have to go to Volvo and buy genuine Volvo coolant?
(off topic, Klaus: removing that ETM is pretty easy correct? 4 10mm bolts that's all right? I've gotta clean that thing)

I cheated. By loosening the bottom radiator hose at the block and letting about 1 quart drain into a clean bucket. Just don't over tighten the clamp and make sure the clamp is in the same position on the hose before you touched it. Then I took the drained antifreeze and poured it back into the overflow bottle, minus a little crud on the bottom.
As to cleaning the ETM, please be careful not to rub it. There is a Canadian firm that makes replacement ETM for 1/2 the dealer price and will last forever.

Thanks for the tip, that's how I plan on doing it.
For the ETM, I can lightly scrub it with, say a nylon brush and some carb cleaner?

ARRRRRGH! Think of the ETM as having a DVD. Would you 'scrub' the backside of a DVD or CD? Would you pour solvent on a DVD, hoping the coating doesn't peel off?
The reason the factory/dealer reprograms the ETM is just to move the actuator to an unworn spot.
I wouldn't touch it.

Ended up skipping out on the clean. Changed fuel filter-man what a difference. Thermostat later today or tomorrow. Do I have to replace the ect too?

Depends on your wallet. It is just a convient time to do so, the ECT is just below the thermostat housing. Usually if the ECT goes bad, there is a code and the CEL will light up. The ECT also shows the temp on the instruments, and if it is fluctuating it is probably good.
Give thought to flushing the antifreeze this spring, use Volvo even if it is 'expensive', you just need one gallon.

Hello 67122, Changing your 11 year old thermostat is a great place to start. I think you can change just the stat on a 1999. With Saabs, at least, changing the coolant temperature sensor at the same time is recommended by everyone. I've read here that in-dash mechanical(blend doors, interior temp sensor) as well as refridgerant line hardware(pressure sensors) can cause ECC code signal lights to flash. Find the list of flash codes. This is why I sought a V70 without ECC and a secondary air pump. Kira
