Excessive engine vibration at idle V70-XC70 2005

Happy New Year to All. I'm relatively new to the Brickboard, but I've owned several Volvos since 1983. Over the years I have done most of my own maintenance and repairs. I recently purchased an '05 V70 2.5T with only 50K. I noticed this engine has excessive vibration at idle so I suspected the upper rear engine mount being faulty. Otherwise car runs great. I took Klaus' advice from a different string and replaced that mount with the IPD poly mount, eventhough the OEM was in decent shape. No help. I know the history of the car and it has not been wrecked. All front suspension components seem to be tight and functioning properly. Eventhough the lower engine mounts look in good shape is there an easy way to test? Any other possibilities I should explore? I have a lot to learn about these FWDs. I would appreciate your thoughts...

Excessive engine vibration at idle V70-XC70 2005

I'm late to the party, but I wanted to point out something (that won't help the poster)

The upper rear engine mount fails on these prematurely, just like it did on the 850's. There is an aftermarket design (not poly) that replaces the OEM. When my indy shop owner ordered one, it turned out to be the OEM. His mechanic (a fomer Volvo dealer mechanic) told him to reorder from somewhere else. I can't remember the name of the manufacturer ):.

Just wanted to point out that there is a better design, without being poly, that is supposed to last longer.

This vibration issue intrigues me - I also have an '05 2.5T with a slightly rough idle...

Just Curious: At idle, do you have a feel for the indicated engine idle RPM (tack)??
a year ago I was riding in a v70, and the owner comlained about a rough idle.
I looked over and it appeared the idle was 600-650 ( I believe mine idle at 750).
I asked him to raise the idle 50 RPM (foot on gas pedal) and the engine smoothed right out ............He repeaded that several times at stop lights and at the slightly higher RPM, the engine was smooth.

Yes, this engine idles at 650 RPM. As I raise the idle, the vibration does decrease to a tolerable amount. 750 RPM seems to be optimum. Correct me if I am wrong, but I do not think the idle can be adjusted mechanically. I think it would have to be a software adjustment. Can this be done at a Volvo dealership with their computer?

650 is much too low for any engine. Perhaps it is time to clean the throttle body?

It is time to pull the plugs and inspect them for wear and gap. They could be original, the OEM plugs last for 50K.
Check the coils for cracks. You might want to take the cover off and run the engine in the dark to look for arcing in the spark plug well.

The poly mount is a piece of crap and causes tons of vibrations. I changed a broken one out with one, and within 2 weeks I replaced it with the OEM one because it annoyed me so much.

I would suspect improperly gapped spark plugs though.

Many people complain about the poly mount, but IPD has a two-piece RUBBER mount which is not as stiff but just as easy to install. And less money to boot!

There are other engine mounts and I suspect they've begun to fail on your car.

      IPD has a good diagram for you;

Thanks for all of the recommendations so far. I had already replaced the plugs with OEM and set gap at .028. Inspection of the coil over boots revealed they are in good shape. The engine runs great. It does not appear to be a miss. The vibration did not get any worse after I replaced the rear upper mount. It appears that I should focus on isolating the problem to a different mount. I appreciate the link to the IPD mount location schematic provided. Hopefully I can track the culprit down. Any other thoughts would be most appreciated.

I have a similar issue. No engine mounts, trans mounts, plugs etc. have helped. I found one forum recently with someone who replaced MAP sensor and said his issue was cured. It was causing voltage issue during idle but never throwing any codes. I am going to try that soon. Mine has a sort of shuddering, shaking, etc. can feel in wheel, seat, floor, and in form of rattling noises in car.

Did you find out if the map sensor was the problem?

I have also not been able to find a faulty mount. Plugs are new and runs great. My car symptoms are VERY similar to yours. No codes are generated. I had a certified Volvo tech that I have known for years check it out. He is also stumped. I'm very interested to find out the results of your MAP sensor replacement.

I have the same exact problem and its very annoying. Mines idles at 600-650 and I think that has something to do with it. Would love to know a solution.

same thing is happening here in my 1995 Volvo 850 5 speed N/A (non-turbo) with 196 K miles.

Mounts are fine. AIC, throttle body, and MAF have been cleaned.
New Champion plugs gapped at 0.028. Recent distributor, rotor, wires.

Other things that I might suspect at pcv and intake manifold gasket.
I've been living with this vibration for 2 years.
