Transmission at 197k miles V70-XC70 2002

Well; the driveline has failed and left me stranded in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Turned a corner and suddenly no drive. The transmission spins freely. If you jack up a corner, the front wheel will turn with the other wheel on the ground and the transmission in Park, and it feels like slipping splines would feel like, but both axles appear to be firmly seated. It is either that, or the spider gears in the differential have failed. No prior warning or noises, except it has always had a lot of play in the driveline. I'll have to find a way back to west Tennessee to pick up my truck and trailer to get it home. Has anyone else had a spider gear failure?

If both of the front wheels turned, with one at a time off the ground, it is the diff that did you in.
An axle will slip even if it has only slipped out 1/4 inch, which is quite rare if they are OEM axles.

    Diff failures are indeed rare.

Thanks Klaus; The plan is to pull the half shaft here and see if that's the problem. Had this exact thing happen on the right side after a replacement shaft was installed. The support bearing was not a press fit on the replacement half shaft and it slid out. Loctite saved the day and it is still securely in place. The left half shaft was already in need of replacement, the boot was split and it was wearing as evidenced by vibration under load, particularly when the assembly moved up and down. Thanks again for the response.

Update-The problem is a broken weld on the passenger side half shaft. Where the factory fabricated the assembly they weld the spline to the axle tube and then mill the od down so the carrier bearing will slide over this area. It broke at this point-i'll have to weld it back together as there are no parts available in Knoxville. Must be a conspiracy-Pep Boys, Aotozone, advanced Auto and NAPA don't even have a link to order one. This will get me home and give time to order it on line. Thanks again Klaus for the reply...

A very rare break and glad you found it. New axles are not that expensive and easily replaced, good luck.
