Engine will not turn over V70-XC70 1999

I am encountering a random electrical problem with trying to start my engine. Once every 2 months I will try and start the engine and all the lights come on but the engine or starter does not come on. If the Cross Country is left alone for 4 to 12 hours then it will start with nothing done to it. This has happened when the auto is cold or hot. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the battery and thought it was repaired. The problem is that when it happens the vehicle is never at the dealer. I have good electrical wiring experience and can trouble shoot wiring problems if I had a wiring schematic of a 1999 XC. Do you know where I can get a copy of the schemeatic to allow me to trouble shoot the problem when it occurs? Any assistance on optional solutions or a source for a schematic would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Engine will not turn over V70-XC70 1999

You can buy an OEM wiring manual by calling 800-25-volvo for your car, not a bad thing to have for any car really.

I've seen loose starter 'S' wire plugs (smaller single plug wire that triggers solenoid) at the starter solenoid on a few newer cars so definately start there as that wire is sometimes pulled too tight, not enough slack. Remove the plug to see if it's loose fitting, easy fix.

Otherwise, "could be's" include starter relay in engine fuse box (can bypass relay jumping terminals 30 to 87 which will illiminate the relay if you can duplicate the no start), otherwise check for signal ground and ign switched 12v+ at the relay plug from the ign switch. '98s were known to have bad ignition switches as there was a recall on them. A bad PNP switch can't be ruled out but it's be VERY rare on a newer car with low mileage like yours (assuming?).

Re: Engine will not turn over 850 1994

Something to try next time this happens to you. Ratchet your gear selector back a forth a number of times then try to start it again. The same thing happens to my 850. The problem is the PNP switch does not have good contact. Moving the gear selector back and forth should clean the contacts enough to get it started. If it is anything like mine, the problem will continue to get worse.

It could be a bad electric fuel pump connector. Your description sounds exactly what happened when I first bought mine. Kind of a fluke thing but if your dealer is struggling with what to do it couldn't hurt to suggest and check it out. Good luck.

I think that towing it to the dealer once it happens will be your best shot. Stay with the car and show them the no start condition. Stay with the car if at all possible to verify that they are actually repairing something. The act of disconnecting and reconnecting your battery may reset the computer, and correct the no start condition, but not actually repair your problem. If they say it's the battery, ask to be shown the battery testing - since you have electrical knowledge certainly you can also tell if a battery is good or not. You dealer may or may not go along with all of this, but it shows your interest in "solving" the problem, and they may go the extra mile in nailing it down for you.
