ABS light S70 1998

Yes....I've read and researched this topic and know there are a lot of posts. Just a quick question though, if I back up and press the brakes a few times, then drive forward to 35 mph, the ABS light extinguishes. After a few miles though, I'll hear/feel the ABS system activate and have the ABS light stay on. Does this sound like a faulty module or possibly a sensor on one of the wheels?

Thanks,
Vinnie

ABS modules are crap. Volvo should replace them all in good faith.
Come to think of it, once VOLVO started making FWD and AWD and outsourcing parts and labor to the lowest bidder, 'crap' was to be expected...
    (2xx, 7xx, and 9xx were great cars).

Someone mentioned Victor, but I did not see a link on the posts. The 97-98 cars are prone to the board in the ABS module overheating and cracking, causing intermittent failure. My experience is that the light will drive you nuts for a couple of months, going on and off. At first it seems to be in response to brake usage or some other factor and can be reset by re-starting the car. It gets worse though, until is just stays on. Seems they go out between 60 and 100k miles regardless of age. Our V70 just turned 70k and I'm expecting the problem any minute now! Victor (Vitor) rebuilds the modules.

given the scope of the ABS module problems I am surprised that it has yet been a recall item. virtually all of them fail at one point or another.

Good for you, you need to get the codes read before assuming the ABS module is bad. So long as the ABS light is on, codes are stored. It could also be the brake pedal position sensor, lots of possibilities.

      Hi Klaus,
Thanks for the info. I just finished checking the sensors on the wheels.....all seem to be good. I cleaned them up anyway.
I'll have the Advanced Auto Parts people read the OBD II in the morning.
BTW, what does the brake pedal position sensor do? Where is it located in my car? How much are these?

      Thanks!
      Vinnie

It sticks out of the vacuum booster in the engine bay. 2 wires, it lets the ABS module know how much brake pedal pressure is being applied. My 1995 got very wet and shorted out for a few days, all was well after it dried out. About a $40 part.

The 1998 is also known for ABS module failure, but you need to check the codes and then visit Victor's site to compare the codes.
