T-6...? purchase, Not sure what to think, has a few problems S80 2000

Hi All,
I am considering this vehicle; 170k, some minor body damage, was told transmission "warms up" after a few minutes and then works fine but only in the automatic mode. It is also misfing and gives off a strong smell carbon/sulfer. I have always driven/serviced the B230 vehicles so this is a very different Volvo! After reading about the tranny problems and throttle body dysfunction I am a bit leary about the purchase but thought I would ask before I made any rash decisions. Thanks for any help with this one!

Given that model, the 2000 year history and symptoms you describe, I would not even take that car for free. The liability of repairs is way to high.

Thanks for the advice Polaris, I do not want to get in over my head, especially if the reparis are major.

I'd steer away from that car personally. If it's misfiring that bad, it's dumping raw gas into the exhaust, and the cat converter is probably toast. The transmission is quite expensive to replace when it finally goes too. If you like the newer cars, let us know what you're looking for and everyone here can give you some tips/advice of what to look for.

Thanks for the information on this, I was looking at this as a daily driver, back and forth to work about 70 miles a day. If the cat is done, I am sure that alone would cost a fortune to replace. The car starts right up but then moderately vibrates the vehicle from the misfire. It sounds like I will just let this one go, I appreciate the info on this for sure. Happy Holidays! Noel

Find yourself a 5 cyl with AWD if you need AWD, the V70s are easier on gas than the V90s and much easier to maintain.
Keep looking, especially those for sale by owner,

Klaus

Thanks for the advice on this Klaus, it woulds like the S80's should be banished from the Volvo family! I am so glad I consulted on this, it was a cheap price, $500.00, but it sounds like I would have poured a couple thousand more into a very unreliable vehicle. For now, I will just keep driving the tried and true 88' 245DL and will consult again when I am ready for a newer wagon. Take care, Noel
