1996 850 T5 Turbo Oil Leak---ITS KILLING MEEE!! 850 1996

Hi Klaus & fellow Volvo'rs,

Here is my problem:

My 850 T5 runs great except for an oil leak that leaks all over the back of the engine and has a very strong oil burning smell when stopping on exit ramps after freeway driving, city driving, all types really but the harder I drive the sooner the smell and smoke (I see smoke billowing out from under the hood). I noticed quite a bit of oil on the bottom of the turbo, but I doubt its getting from there to the exhaust. I've also noticed some oil around the valve cover that I'm thinking could be dripping and burning on the manifold - doesn't look like its coming out the oil fill hole.

Some one gave me this answer and I'm 95% sure he's right:

Quote:
There will be no more smell after running it with the turbo return tube replaced. It took a while to get the smell to go away, but that fixed it.

Tonight I took off the plastic cover that hides the spark plugs, and found oil in all the indentations in the head. After a little searching, I also found a hose that is connected to the passenger side of the intake manifold that had rotted off (5/16 od and 1/8id). Does this hose have anything to do with the PCV system? I never noticed any oil coming from the oil filler cap, just a little around where it meets the valve cover. I'll see what happens when I run it for a while now that that hose is re-connected (whatever its for?).

Now I would love to order the parts and get started repairing it but I have no idea what the parts I need are. If anyone would be so kind as to tell me what parts I will need to tackle this job I would be very grateful....the smell is KILLING MEEE!! :x :x

You need to replace your oil separator (PCV) now, not later. FCP Groton has a kit to do this, the price went up since I did it 2 years ago. It is a 5 hour job, removing the intake manifold and lifting it on top of the head to get to the oil separator and replacing the hoses.

Also, clean out the PCT nipple where the hose connects to the air intake in front of the turbo at the same time.

Sounds like both of the cam seals are compromised, the one behind the distributer and the rear cam.

You could ALSO have a leaking turbo return seal, just order the parts at the same time, cheap fix.

Last is getting a new oil cap seal and a couple of O rings for the dipstick.

That should hold you for a week.

And stop with all of the CAPS!!!

      Hi Klaus,

PCV seems to be good. I had the pressure coming from the oil dipstick measured and it was quite low. The PCV system was completely redone last year. What do you think?

Did you do it, or a shop? Most shops do not clean out the PCT. Your car has a turbo gauge, watch it at idle. It should swing to the far left if you rev it up to 3K and suddenly drop the rpm to idle.

That hose you mentioned on the passenger side of the manifold is part of the PCV system. It normally lasts longer than 1 year. One end goes into the manifold by #1 port and the other end is in the separator box.

The oil leaking from the turbo return line only does that under boost, not at idle.

There should never be oil seeping out from the cap/rotor, indication the oil seal needs to be replaced.

It was done at the stealer. Don't really know about the PCT. Your car has a turbo gauge, watch it at idle. It should swing to the far left if you rev it up to 3K and suddenly drop the rpm to idle.

The oil leaking and the smoke I'm not 100% sure if these are the same problem.

I get the smoke even when I drive lightly...Sometimes I can drive reallt hard and no smoke..as soon as I start driving slower...the smell comes from the heat or AC which ever is on...and smoke starts coming from under the hood.

I did not see any oil coming from the cap or rotor...The last time I changed my sparkplugs there was a lot of oil under the plastic Volvo 20 valve cap...I thought it might be due to me leaking oil when not using a funnel to fill the oil after an oil change(which has happened)

The smoke is from oil dripping on to your exhaust and then vaporizing from the heat. If it is the turbo return oil read this:

Yeah Klaus actually I was thinking the EXACT same thing...

              http://auto-parts.fcpgroton.com/3514546--model-850-Turbo

I was going to order the sump kit...but was kind-of convinced otherwise because I saw that others had the same problem but blamed it on (turbo return tube ) and claimed that the replaced new turbo return tube solved the problem.

But would this possibly be the source of my terrible oil leak...I mean 5.3 liters of Synthetic in < 3000kms?

I also couldn't find it on FCP's site ...I didn't know what it's called...could you help me find it?

By the way thanks for your help Klaus...your amazing!

But these are for coolant aren't they? My 850 isn't leaking coolant it's leaking oil.

Have you checked for oil in the intercooler? I am having a problem with oil usage in that it is leaking from my intercooler. Think the turbocharger seal is bad. I have an email into Klaus about this.
