Tailgate Locked V70-XC70 1998

I have read a few old threads regarding the rear lock mechanism in a '98-'00 v70. My XC had a broken rear window, and the bits of glass seem to have dropped into the lock. I was able to remove the rear hatch trim without too much trama and get access to the locking mechanism. I cannot say this for any of my old 740's, however. In any event, the lock would still not release from the car, and I removed the torx holding the strike plate and was able to open the hatch. However, while I was able get some of the glass from the lock, it will still not release the strike plate.

Thoughts?

Even a very small piece of glass lodged in the wrong place will keep the latch from working. As you know, the latch is all one piece. If you can get it out and shake it upside down to get any remaining glass out, great. If not, start looking for a replacement latch. For a pick&pull, the 1994-1999 years should work.

Thanks. Is it possible to remove the latch with the strike plate dangling from it?

Ouch. That does present a large problem. It might have to be cut off. I have not been there, so can offer no advice.

I have to think you'll end up cutting the striker plate off.

You should get a new one from FCP for ~$15. It helped mine to close better anyway (I have a terrible time closing my tailgate - a new striker plate improved things greatly).
