v70 alternator V70-XC70

Brought my 04 2.4L FWD into a garage for a parking brake problem and they did a courtesy check - which I was later charged for - of the alternator. Was told it was producing out of range fluctuations on the diode, or something, and I needed an alt. They would do it for $500+ and said the Volvo part itself was $500 from the dealer. They would use the next best thing....

Can I just check this w/ a multimeter? How hard is changing the alternator on a v70 if necessary?

Thanks. Also, is the regulator a separate part of built into the alternator?

Well, my 01 V70 T5 alternator died about a year ago and the part was indeed no less than $350 (though very similar ones are being sold for about $100 but not exactly the same part). The job was about 4 hrs, I believe.

The problem is that when alternator dies it takes battery with it most of the time which is also about $180 (it's a goddamn rocket science solid state battery ;-) ). But even so, it seems like a no-brainer to me to just wait for it to die of natural causes rather than trying to do preventive maintenance.

Just wait for that battery icon to light up on the console. If you stop real soon then you may be able to save the battery, only lose the alternator. ;-)

Stay away from that garage! Do not go back, unless you don't like money.

Your car is too new for these kind of problems. Yes, you can easily check the alternater output with a multimeter. The alternator should be putting out 14-14.7V depending on active systems.

The diode board is piggy backed on the alternator and can be replaced, but it is also not that cheap.

If you have a multimeter, I got a cheapy from Harbor Freight, you can check the battery. If the battery is holding a charge then the alternator is doing its job. If the battery is low that's another story.

I'd certainly want a 2nd opinion before dropping $500 on the info they gave you. I have this cheap radio shack thing that has 3 LEDs to tell you the voltage on the system. Plugs into the cigarette lighter. Newer styles have digital read out of the voltage. For less than $30 you can do this, or run some wires to hook up a volt meter to see what's happening as you drive around.

Personally, unless you are a good sustomer, sounds like the shop needs business, Ha Ha!!!

v70 alternator -- sound in engine compartment V70-XC70

Thanks all. I have been a very good customer, and they have been helpful when it was really needed, in a squeeze. However, a new owner took over after many years.... Very disappointing.

The one wrinkle is that there has been a low whine, a whhaaa whhhaaa whhaaaa, that increases in amplitude with throttle, and I was wondering if perhaps this is the alternator straining. But the two probably aren't connected. The sound is distressingly like an old Olds I once rented that needed a torque converter. The noise decreases slightly when I shut off the AC but the tone remains and it still goes up and down with RPMs.

Anyway, 104,000 miles and cost almost nothing until now.....

Whine might also be serpentine belt tensioner. Was this looked at when the t-belt service was done?

It is putting out a steady 14.8V. (The 5 year old battery looks like new - one advantage of it being dry and next to the spare tire).

Is it possible that something else is causing the "variation on the diode board" that this mechanic mentioned? Otherwise I'll assume the alternator is working fine.

Strain it. Turn on every electrical thing you can think of in the car, then test the voltage across the terminals. Do your lights dim a lot with things like the heater turned on, power windows, etc? If you're still getting a reading in the high 13's-14, your alternator is just fine...for now anyway. If it drops to around 12 or 13, it's probably on its way out.

I've been trying to track down a similar noise with my mother's Honda that I've been driving for a month now until I go home for Christmas. It has an annoying whine in the morning that isn't the alternator, and it disappears entirely for the next day until the engine is cold again.
