Hi guys. This 850 makes me feel too much like the dimwit I must be. I am more of a 240 guy and feel extra dumb. My wife and I were driving along and the service light came on. Then, the next evening the Check Engine light came on. One, I do my own service if I can. Two, how do I make these lights go out. Three, where do I find the issues that go with the codes that I am sure to bring up on the OBDII? Any answers or direction to other sites would be helpful. Thanks. jg

Buy the 850 Haynes repair manual. It has a complete list of the codes you might find.
To reset the Service Light do the following: From an old IPD Tech tip:
Turn the key to on position so all warning lights light up
Locate test port "A" behind the passenger light compartment
Remove the cover and pull out the test lead.
Insert test lead in terminal 7 Push button 4 times wait about 5 seconds and red lamp should glow continuously. You are now in data reset mode.
Push button 1 time and wait 5 seconds for light to glow again then push the button 5 times. After 5 seconds the light will glow again. Push the button one more time.....the light will flash repeatedly indicating the light has been reset. If it doesn't, try repeating the whole process turning the key off and on again.
Light comes on every 10,000 miles or so many hours.
You use this same port to read your codes. Haynes explaines this.

Well, I tried it. The little A light works, but that is it. No codes using the probe and waiting. No light if I release the button. Light only works if I push the button. I turned the key off a couple of times and then back to on with all the little lights on the dash. I even disconnected the battery and reconnected thinking that MAYBE it would re-set things. No joy. The whole thing looked a little worse for wear and the B side has no probe attached at all. Now this car also has the OBDII plug-in inside the car under the little coin holder. Would it also do the same thing for pulling codes? Where do I find a code reader for that?

Just called IPD and they said my OBDII port is like for dealership only and will not accept a regular code reader since my car was actually build it late '94. Any ideas anyone?

Your 1995 has onboard diagnostics, just like the 240/740. Read this:
http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineOBDCodes.htm
The check engine light has nothing to do with the service light. You can turn off the service light, just search on it. Probably A-7, 555, 1-5-1. Not sure, its been a while.

Klaus,
I wrote you while back about my early 850 turbo,1995. Traction light and ABS light going on now and then. Now we have the arrow Shift light flashing, check engine and service light, ABS traction light problem. The shop has checked everything out(of course some thing is not right) but he can not get the service light to go out and the check engine light comes on right away then when you drive it the Traction light and ABS comes on. Before we condemn the shop this guy is a good volvo guy he has worked on my 145 740t and this 850 for years. But now he is stumped. He has called Volvo and they have not been able to help him fix it. My explanation may not be good enough, I can get more information from him as to what has been checked.
Thanks

I am surprised your mechanic can't read the computer under the hood. You certainly can. Just pull off the cover on the "A" box and insert the probe into slot 1 and push the black button for less than a second. You will get back a series of 3 flashes of the red light. Push it again to get the next code, etc. until you get the first number again. Then push and hold the button for a 7 count, the light comes on steady, and push and hold for another 7 count, that should delete any stored codes in "A1". Those that are still present are your problem.
I suspect that the PNP switch is giving you this flashing tranny light, so try "rowing" the shifter about 20 times from R to L. That usually moves some of the grease around and gets dirt off the PNP switch. This routine may last a week or a couple of months, plenty of time to replace the PNP - Park, Neutral Position switch. Another indication of a bad PNP is the back up lights not working when in R.
Also check the engine codes in A-2 and A-6.
ABS codes are in A-3. Just read and clear them first. The ABS light will not turn out until you take the car up to 20 mph, so don't get discouraged. Usually, one of the sensors at the wheel gets 'blind' because of the rust on the axle splines has filled in the the grooves which get sensed. Just use a wire brush to clean of the axles and you will be good to go. The ABS module seldom fails.
I looked at your 220!!!!!!!!!!! Totally impressed! Can you come by and work on my 220? :)

thanks for the responses,
He has replaced the PNP switch and the ABS module and the VDO speedo assembly, the wheel speed sensor have been checked (I replaced the rear wheel sensors last year but not change) but something is still not right. he gets a 323? code, says sensors are sending a code but not getting to comp.? Comp. is bad? or wires to units bad? Could there be any conection between not being able to reset the service light and the check engine light.
Info is hard to relate to you. I sent the email to him.
Thanks

Reset service light on a 1995:
Insert diagnostic probe into slot A-7. Push black 4 times, wait for red light. Push angain 1 time, wait a second, push 5 times, wait a second, push again 1 time. done.
To use the OBDII, the key must be in position II and the doors closed.
Now, the 323 code is for the left rear wheel sensor with problems at over 25mph. This is usually because of a dirty axle, not a wiring problem. I am surprised you replaced your ABS module since 1994-5 are quite robust, unlike the 1996+ cars.
If the PNP switch has been replaced, tell the mechanic to put the car in R with the ignition on and check the back up lights. If the lights are not on, the PNP needs to be aligned properly. What are the current tranny codes?

If the transmission "arrow" light is coming on you should change your trans fluid as soon as possible (unless you know you've done it recently, that is). There is an article about this on Bay13:
http://volvospeed.com/Repair/Transflush.php
Do this now before your transmission fails.
ABS and Tracs Off lights usually mean a busted ABS/TRACS module on the 1996+ cars - not sure about the '95...
Don't worry about the service light - it's just a reminder that it's time to take it to the dealer and doesn't really reflect any reading/measurement of anything.
Until you read the codes out of the computer there is no way to tell what is causing the Check Engine light. Get the codes and we might be able to help. Read the description of how to read codes from the 7xx/9xx page linked to in a previous response above, and follow the instructions carefully. Write down every code you read out of the computer. You can read and clear the codes in the computer yourself using the procedures outlined on that page. This is exactly the same procedure your mech will use.
Without knowing what codes are leading to the Check Engine light, I would suggest the regular tune-up maintenance stuff:
- replace all vac lines and elbows
- clean throttle body
- clean idle air control valve
- check for intake manifold leaks
- new plugs, new dist cap & rotor, new plugs
also:
- O2 sensors fail often and they might be the cause of your problem
- ditto for MAF
- you need the codes to proceed so go read them out of the car
