Fuel door, redux S70 98

OK. Checked the manual again, check for a cable in the trunk. Must be getting blind. Still cannot open the fuel door manually. Does this mean I need to take the side panel off and mess around with the solenoid? Thanks for your suggestions.

Re: Fuel door, redux S70 98

My 98 S70 does not have a manual release. Maybe the V70s do.

You can remove the panel in the interior of the trunk. It comes

out pretty easily after removing the plastic clips that

hold it in. You can then reach up and "fiddle" with the

mechanisim. There is a solenoid that pulls on a lever that

unlatches the door. Just feel for the solenoid and pull on

the same lever it pulls on.

I went ahead and added my own manual release by drilling a small

hole in the solenoid lever (or actuating arm, can't remember) and

put a cable tie through it formed into a loop. Then connected a

bit of cut off coat wire to the cable loop and fed it out a hole

in the interior panel. The cable tie is used to allow the solenoid

to work without having to move the coat hanger wire (in other

words, I did not want the coat hanger wire to limit and jam the

solenoid).

Ray et al.

Thanks to all of you. I am the original owner on July 97 production S70 and it does not have the manual release (no mention of it in the manual either). So, Ray, thanks for the design specs on this one. It's a good idea to retrofit it that way.

My 1998 S70 came with a manual release. I suspect someone pulled too hard (perhaps out of curiosity rather than need), accidently detached it, and did not bother to have it repaired. Are you the original owner?

Re: Fuel door, redux S70 98

I am the original owner. The car has a 1/97 build date

and was purchased in 4/97. Looks like they did not

add the release until a later production run. Jerzy's

post kind of confirms that. What is the build date

for your 98 S70 (its on the drivers door)?

Re: Fuel door, redux S70 98

Build month was 12/97. Evidently the remote was a mid-year enhancement. Someone at Volvo must have discovered that jammed fuel doors were a common occurence.

Re: Fuel door, redux S70 98

Jammed fuel doors on Volvos go all the way back to the first year the 850 was introduced (1993). This is a common problem on 850s and S70s alike that Volvo should know about by 1998. Why some '98 S70s didn't have a manual release is beyond me.

Good luck.

Re: Fuel door, redux S70 98

The procedure at the web page is for an 850. Can anyone explain any differences for a 1998 V70?
