Its been a while 850 1996

My last Login was July of 2007.

I guess I have been volvo free for longer than I thought.

I am currently looking at a 96 850 non-turbo. The are no apparent problems. However, I have read about potential issues with strut tops, axles and a couple other small things.

Yes, I popped in for info. But mostly I dropped by to say hi and that I am coming back into the volvo world. No +T Conversions this time. That was fun, but I need a daily driver :)

Hi Caleb,

We were waiting for your return to the fold :)

The only serious item could be the auto tranny, if it was abused by teenagers. Of course the front suspension does all of the work so there could be worn strut mounts, bushings, steering stuff, engine mounts, and clogged PCV systems. Most of these are fairly cheap and easy to replace/repair.

Do look for a car with maint history, the Tbelt gets changed at 70K intervals.

I would recommend that you make sure the tranny fluid looks good (reddish - not brown/burnt) as 850 auto trannys don't have a filter and need to be flushed. Brown fluid could indicate major transmission work in the cars near future. Also note that the timing belt should be replaced every 75K.

Over a million Volvo miles and still smiling:-)
