Timing Belt tensioner - 1994 Volvo 850

I just replaced the timing belt on my 94 Volvo 850. However the timing belt tensioner did not have the little plastic clip (PACMAN shape) that is supposed to be present according to Bay 13. The replacement belt (mail order) did not come with one either.

What is the purpose of this piece of plastic ? If it is essential, could someone get me the part # so I can get it from a dealer.

Thanks

Ramesh

Re: Timing Belt tensioner - 1994 Volvo 850

The part in question is a white, nylon spacer. It was originally designed as an after-thought to prevent the timing belt from losing tension{and subsequently "jumping"} should the engine turn backwards{due to backfire or left in gear and engine used as a brake, particularly manual trans}.

I, personally, would use nothing other than the genuine belt which comes with that spacer and a new interval sticker{available from any Volvo dealer}. Anything short of genuine is asking for trouble {these ARE interference engines and trying to save money on a $50 belt is ridiculous}.

You need the spacer (pack-man), it's a safety device should your hydraulics on the tensioner fail, it won't allow the belt to jump teeth on you. The part number is 1271851 and the parts list calls it a washer.

The replacement timing belt should come with the plastic clip. And the old plastic clip may have fallen out. Can say that to maintain a certain level of cleanliness you should have it installed. The movement of piston needs to be protected from the elements even with belt shield covering it. Not sure of the part number, but expect to pay darely for it at a dealer. Maybe you should contact the mail-order house to inform them.
