1993 850 5 speed, stay way? 850

Found a 1993 850 with 84k on it and wondering if I should stay away from it since its the first model year. Only reason im thinking about it is because its a stick. Dont really know 850's all that well been into the 240, and 940's. I know a good taken care of 850 with records is good and to stay away from one that needs work or is a cheap deal. I do most of my own work so thats not really a big deal.

A friend of mine had the auto version. It ran well until about 200,000 then began stalling at various times and would restart for days. He took it to several shops. No one could diagnose it other than to say it must be somekind of an electrical problem. He then sold it.

I had a 93 850 - biggest issues for that year are auto tranny - which is not an issue in your case and the AC. Also there are some parts you need to be careful of. Headlights, brake rotors, etc - not a big deal for me but it has been about 3 years since I moved on. After taking mine to 310k miles I moved up to a 94.

If it is a deal, go for it. The front suspension and wheels are different, require more maint but is cheaper for some parts. Tbelt is every 50K, as are plugs, cap&rotor, and Sbelt.
The 5 speeds are nice, expect the clutch to go to 200K.
The PCV system does need to be watched for crud buildup

They are asking 3,900 and put a clutch in it already. Makes me wonder.

Hmmm. You could check A-7 for the odo reading in case someone replaced the instrument cluster. Still, no bargain at that price.

I can't comment out of experience, but the prevailing wisdom on this board seems to be that the 93's are a weird beast with some uncommon parts and they live in their own plane of existence...

that said there are folks that have them with little-to-no problems, so the strangeness may be manageable.

Nah, the '93's are good cars too...just have strange little differences from all the rest. Those are really low miles! The timing belt interval on these is much shorter, and the wheels are different off the top of my head. Definately ask about records, and check Carfax!

The stick shift is a lot of fun - I drove a N/A S70 with a stick, but it had spent life up north, so I ended up with my turbo instead =D.

We have owned a 1993 850 GLT since new. Automatice with 140,000 miles currently. Never left us stranded and never major issues. Some differences in parts, but never a problem getting them. Wheels are 4 bolt, timming belt every 50k. Some members claim the suspension is sportier than '95' on. I think it handles great. A stick should be quicker. If the miles and records are good I wouldn't worry. The biggest expense was the a/c evaporator, which lasted 16 years/135k mi, costing $1,300 at an independant garage. The car should go forever with regular service. Enjoy.
