OBDII Scanner S70 99

Was in the local Kragen Auto Supply (PartsAmerica other parts of the U.S), and lo and behold, they had a OBD-II scanner by AutoXray. It was a ProPack model for $359.00. Checked out the box, and they have a website at www.autoxray.com. Think I may just have to shell out for one. Want to avoid our dealer unless absolutely necessary.

    I'm thinking of this myself:

    http://www.obd-2.com/

its $122 and can do much more than a standard scanner.

      Re: OBDII Scanner S70

Did you purchase the obd-2? If so, how well does it work? I just got an e-mail from Alex Peper with obd-2 and he said it would read all engine and tranny codes but would use generic description for manufacturer defined codes. Does this mean it would convert Volvo's proprietary codes to a generic code? If it does, I guess I could live with that for $122. I also need to be able to reset my service light since I live about 150 miles from nearest dealer and can do most of my own service anyway. Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Re: OBDII Scanner S70 99

Barry, you may want to look at Actron model CP9035. I bought mine for around $170 at AutoZone. It is very basic and simple to use. It was not able to read the proprietary Volvo codes, but was able to clear the Check Engine Light regrdless. I have also helped felow BBer clear his CEL and was also able to read the code in his case (it must have been a generic OBDII code).

    Good luck.

      Re: OBDII Scanner S70 99

Vladimir replies that he used an Actron OBD-II scanner from Autozoo, but says that Volvo's use "proprietary codes". Do you mean to say that Volvo has it's own format for this? I'm new to the OBD-thing, but investigating. When I've heard of the word propritary in computer-dom, and other engineering, I take this to mean "does not follow normal convention". Is this another effort on Volvo's part to surrender to dealer service. I've found things like 7mm Torx, 11mm,15mm hex to be rather an annoyance. As is the lack of manuals available.

        Re: OBDII Scanner S70 99

Barry, Qbrozen has summed it up pretty well. The OBDII standard is the MINIMUM cars have to comply with to be able to be sold in US, but there is nothing that says that the same channel that carries the standard OBDII data can't carry any other kind of data. OBDII is simply a data channel. Volvo uses it to communicate with the car's vatious systems as well as comply with the OBDII requirement. I believe MY99 and higher use a totally different and more complicated system than do earlier models.

        Good luck.

        Re: OBDII Scanner S70 98

Most codes for most cars are proprietary. That's why there are OBDII reading tools for each manufacturer (each manufacturer even requires a different cable). You won't find a scanning tool for that cheap which can read many proprietary codes. Scanners used by professional mechanics to read all codes are very expensive. Really has nothing to do with Volvo in particular as you would find this issue with just about any car.

I've seen OBD-II go for MUCH cheaper on E-bay, you may want to look there...
