Resetting CEL on '96 850T5 850

Greetings.

Can one of those cheap, $60 OBD2 code readers from Harbor freight reset my check engine light? OBD2 is smart enough that a simple battery un-hook won't do it right?

I'm almost certain that the code is for the rear o2 sensor. The car threw this code several times, then I got the sensor replaced and all was well for a number of weeks. Well, apparently there's a service bulletin about a wire extension recommended by Volvo to keep the connector out of oil leaks or something. Once I installed this wire extension, the CEL came on the next day.

So I know these things are not the greatest at pulling Volvo codes, but I think I can solve my problem by removing the wire extension and resetting the CEL.

Thanks.

Well, I don't know what you guys are talking about but I had my battery disconnected for a good ten minutes and it did not reset the CEL. I did have to reset the radio code though :-P

I ordered this cable and software on Ebay from Hong Kong that is supposed to work with '96 OBD2 cars, using a laptop with a serial port. I only have $37 into it, and it seemed perhaps like a more elegant solution than a generic code reader... If it works. I'll report back.

It'll still sorta hold a charge if you do that...you haveta step on the brake pedal or turn the ignition on or something after you disconnect the battery cable. Or the OBD reader works too =P

If you live in an area where emmissions testing is done, disconnecting your battery is not reccomended. The engine will have to go through a lengthy drive cycle to pass the test, the state will receive a message that the engine is not ready.

There are some really cheap code readers that only display "pass/fail", others will have run time diagnostics. You want a code reader that says it will clear codes on the front of the box. Considering most dealers want $100 to read codes, investing in a $100 code reader is prudent and very cost effective. So is going to a local autoparts store and borrowing a code reader.

Did you get the same code after the rear O2 sensor was replaced? If yes, I am sure of the cause. My 99 v70 story was after the front O2 sensor replaced, I got CEL the next day. It turned out to be a totally different code. you might want to make sure of that first.

As to reset CEL, my understanding is that disconnecting battery (for 10-15 min) is the way to erase all info from your car computer. using a code reader will not clear up your driving history though CEL is off.
