hesitation, low boost on 850 turbo 850

hey everyone, i've gotta question thats a stumper to me..
I recently picked up a very well kept '95 850 turbo wagon, however its not producing the power that it should at all in my opinion.

At first i thought it may be the intercooler piping may have a leak.. I replaced one bad hose and did a soapy water spray test to see if i had any air leaks, no leaks to be found. when i nail the gas or even just accelerate heavily it will bring the boost about 1/4" into the boost side of the gauge, but then it will hesitate like it's losing the boost. (this isn't just happening on a shift) Even in the "sport" mode it will do this too. just seems to dog out.

Otherwise the car drives great, idles perfectly after a couple minutes warming up. I have the intake off at the moment and am cleaning out the oil trap box and related parts..

Any ideas on why i have this loss of power and hesitation? once at a high speed it will stay there, just takes quite a while to get there. I've also run a few tanks worth of quality fuel system cleaner through the car as well..

Thanks for any suggestions!
c.

RK meant to say turbo. Check the hose connections for all 3 hoses back there. No leaks allowed. Also, do not mix them up!
Soapy water doesn't work, unless you have someone sit on the engine watching while you go 0-60 :) Just grab an IC hose and try to twist it at the connection points, especially at the throttle body.

Revving the engine will not produce any boost, there needs to be a load on the engine.

ahh, I didnt know there were that many hoses back there, I'll be sure to check them all. And I didnt mean just revving the engine. It's an automatic so I was going to have someone powerbrake it while I did the test to build up pressure.. Thanks for that bit though, i'll be sure to look for the others.

Do you know anywhere I may see a diagram of all that piping to know what it all looks like and where it goes?

While i was dealing with the pcv stuff I did find that the 5/16 plastic tube coming out of the oil trap and going down the length of the engine was broken. I went over it with 5/16" heater hose and clamped it to seal that off. Thats also where my small oil leak was coming from.

Load up this URL. It has one of the better images of the turbo vacuum line configuration:

        http://media.photobucket.com/image/wastegate%20actuator%20volvo%20850/TIPSP/For%20Sale%20Items/My%20Drawings/Turbo-1.jpg

If you click anywhere inside the image, it will zoom for easier reading.

If you incorrectly connect them, low boost will result. My 98 V70 T5M will produce 15 psi. When one hose was incorrect, the best I could get was 5 psi.

Rather than fret over cracks and leaks, just replace them all with silicone. Hose is cheap. IPD has hose. Also look here:

Replace them one at a time so as not to mix up the connections.

well, thanks everyone for your input! I got the intake and everything back together today and whatever i cleaned out or repaired fixed the problem.... this car now has some serious serious pickup..... i took it out to a deserted road to see what she'd do and the tires spun through 40 mph... i am very impressed and everything seemed to work just as it should. Thanks again!

Power braking on 850 turbo 850

Be very careful when power braking. These trannies are not that strong, and slipping the torque converter like that can overload the internal pumps and blow their seals.

Just look for obvious leaks in the IC piping and then concentrate in the turbo area.

Did you check the hoses on the compressor ? Mine had a broken 1" Dia. curved hose the break was hidden until power was added. Pressure was escaping through the break.
    Good luck!! RK

Compressor? I'm not sure I follow... do you mean one of the pressurized hoses? I'll double check things though, I didnt do the soapy water bubble test under load, just on idle. I'll try this again when i'm back together this evening

if you meant otherwise let me know and I'll try it.
      Thanks!
