auto trans.selector lighting 850 1995

Does anyone know how difficult it is to replace the bulb that illuminates

the "P,R,N,D,1,2" lettering for the auto trans. gear selector? Is this a dealer job? I hate the dealer!

Sorry Mrsha, not yet. It was a busy weekend but will try again this weekend. I forgot about Bay 13 and someone let me know they had a page

making the job alot easier. Thanx again.

Thanks much Rich! I have checked out Bay 13 before but did not realize

they had something on the gear selector lighting.

Re: auto trans.selector lighting 850 1997

Definitely not a job for the dealer.

The "proper" procedure is to remove centre console, in which case the bulb replacement is trivial.

The "lazy" procedure is to merely remove the front part of the console around the gear lever (2 Torx screws under the OBDII cover if I remember correctly) and use long nose needle pliers and patience. (Worked for me... and if you hate the dealer that much it'll doubtless work for you too)

The bulb/holder prices are ludicrous. I managed to modify one to take a normal bulb, next time it goes, I'll mod it to take a white LED/resistor pack. Should last forever that way.

Re: auto trans.selector lighting 850 1995

Take less than 20 minutes... maybe 15 ... the buld cost $10 at dealer very expensive for little thing...

job is very stairt forwad.. I think only 6 screw max.. but they are torque bit I think..

I just do mine last month cake walk no instruction need just get into it...

there are some screw hidden in the cigarete ash tray I think hold them down

2 torque screw hiden in their If I remenber correctly hold the thing down..

Re: auto trans.selector lighting 850 1995

Changing the bulb is quite easy. Pull out the coin holder and look in the console, stidy the part that fits near the shifter slot, then follow your nose

Three suggestions -

There are two different bulb sockets, if the parts man is not SURE which is yours, buy both and make sure you can bring back the unneeded one. I made two trips.

I found that I needed a helper to hold the console up during the bulb change, which did not take long.

Have some cleaning materials handy, including some Q-tips, you might be surprised what you find under the console.
