Trouble Starting, esp. when low on gas V70-XC70 1999

Car has trouble starting. It always starts, but sometimes it takes a while for it to turn over. It has never misfired; problem happens in any weather (hot/cold); and does not correspond to whether the car has been driven recently or not. This happens rarely when the gas tank is full, but more often when the tank is low. I was told at the dealer that it could be my ignition coils - since all 5 have cracks. The cracks do exist, but are tiny and seem insignificant. Could it be the coils that delay the car turning on? Or could it be related to high tensions lead problems, contact breaker or capacitor, or maybe something different like a fuel pump problem?
thanks

So the car cranks, turns over, but doesn't start, right? Like the others have keyed in on, it sure sounds like a fuel issue. If that is the case, it will only get worse, causing a no-start condition or stalling on the highway.

Try "priming" the fuel system by turning the key to pos II for about 5 seconds before turning further to engage the starter. That will allow the fuel pump a little more time to build pressure and with any luck will make it start with less cranking. If that helps, or your fuel filter hasn't been replaced in the last 100K miles, consider replacing it.

      that's a good idea Will.
Actually, if the problem is losing pressure between starts, it might take more than one application of the 'turn-to-pos-II-to-run-the-pump' trick to get the pressure built up enough to start easily, as the relay will shut the pump off after about 2 seconds automatically... doing it more than once will keep the pump running longer and will built up more pressure. You can really hear the noise of the pump change from a higher pitch noise to a lower pitch noise if the line has little pressure and then the pump builds it up.

I recently went through this with my fuel pump and it normally took 3-4 times before the pressure was built up enough to start easily. I have of course since changed my pump.

Have you tried a new fuel filter? Less than $20. A bad coil will give you a misfire, even when trying to start the car. A plugged fuel filter will keep you from starting until the pressure is up.

If not the filter, maybe the fuel pressure regulator? I know they go bad in S40s and usually don't set a code, and have identical symptoms.
