rear gear howling noise V70-XC70 2003

The awd went to fwd, intermittently at first then quit altogether about five months ago. Now it started making a howling noise from the rear similar to an old truck rear end gear whine. If I hold the speed constant the noise is constant if I slow down it is lower and louder if I speed up the pitch is quiter and higher.

These may be unrelated, but when asking around about the awd quitting, someone said that a bushing in the third member may have cracked. I do some work on cars but I have no idea what a third member is. Help I can not afford a big diagnostic bill now.

Most likely the carrier bearing is kaput and needs to be replaced. If you don't NEED awd, just disconnect the propeller shaft and store it on the garage floor. Easy to do, but it is heavy.

Is the carrier bearing inside the pumpkin? Is it hard to replace? Would the bearing affect the rear drive wheels as for my loss of awd? Thank You for your help Klaus.

You are refering to the viscus coupling, just forward of the rear differential. The VC could have died, and in that case cannot be repaired. But the VC can be used from a donor car. Local salvage yards sell them for around $400.
