850 autotrans AW50-42LE hesitating 1>2 ? when cold 850

Hi,
recently my 850-94 has hesitated in shifting 1>2 right after leaving home. I have a small up hill (1000ft) to begin after first shift no problem at all.

I get no codes, oil is fairly new (one year M1 synt ATF).
I have never reset any trans oil changed counter if any, the car has 300kkm, oil change every 80-100 kkm ie. 3 times, and has a inline magnefine filter for one year now since last change.

Anybody know which sensors/signal trans. cpu is considering when shifting 1>2,
speed, load, rpm, throttle position, trans oil temp.?

any experience from the forum?
br Tapsa

There is no tranny fluid change counter.

When the fluid is cold, the sensor is also cold, and the tranny doesn't want to shift until the rpm gets higher. The fluid temp starts to go up in about one mile, faster if you go up hill due to the torque converter slip.

It should be possible to force an upshift by getting up to 15mph and letting up off the pedal. Or push the W button after the car is moving?

Hi, what you describe is the normal function, oalso in my case since last 10 years. What I now experience is occational change in behaviour as weather is gettting colder in the morgning.

What I'm looking for is poor signal connection, clogged vacuum line or similar influencing the decision making TCM to shift 1to2?

Yesterday i ran the TDC-A1 DTM3 sequence few times to exorcise the solenoids but don't expect it to help much.

      I'll wait and see.

How long does your car wait before shifting up to 2nd? Mine is really dumb in the mornings if it's really cold outside (like single-digits cold) and will sometimes wait til over 3000 rpm's before it goes up to 2nd...with my foot barely on the gas

Interestingly, if you hard-reset the ECU by pulling the battery cable, it shifts normally when cold...maybe you could give this a try and have the car re-learn its shift points.

There are specific solenoids in the valve body that are involved with gear selection. One of these may be hanging up when cold. Try: www.babcox.com/editorial/ic/ic40238.htm
