Probably PO pulled the light out rather than fix it. Before you pull the instrument panel, easily done, stop by an autoparts store and borrow a code reader to pull the codes. If the ABS is not working, there will be some generic codes.

NO ABS LIGHT ! 850

I pulled the inst. cluster and sure enough the ABS bulb was removed as was the SRS bulb. Went to the auto parts store and they could not read ABS codes, as it turns out there is only one place in town ( BATTLE CREEK MI. ) that can and they want $60.00 JUST to read them... Any suggestions?
Also.... I sure hope this car has trac control as the tires loose traction way to easy as this car has an oversize turbo. THANKS

Battle Creek, MI is not that small! PePboys, Advance auto, can check codes for you and that includes ABS. SRS is Volvo only.

Your ABS system controls traction control also, which your car does have. You could just send your ABS module out for a "fix" or re-solder it yourself. Look around for the best prices, but Victor does a very good job.

Never said the town was small. Both autozone and advance auto could scan codes but not ABS codes, We do not have a pepboys. If the odds are 90% it's the module (it usually is with the audi's) I'll just go ahead and have it rebuilt. I've had good luck with ATE in the past.
Am I correct that it probably is the module?
I do not have a trac light warning and I know there's a bulb in there. Thanks Wilbur

For a 1996, yes the ABS module is normally the culprit. Of course, a good Scantec scanner should have given you the codes. On some of the older 1994-5s where the module never goes bad, the axles rust and then the individual wheel sensors indicate a fault.
The ATE modules are not that expensive and worth a shot.

If you have an SRS light, you will have to bite the bullet and have Volvo scan the problem and clear the code. They could also give you the codes for the ABS at the same time. Or wait and do it after the ABS module replacement.

For $60 you can buy an OBD II scanner on ebay and read/reset your own codes. Really easy to use and codes available on line.

Does the ABS light come on when you turn on the ignition switch? If not the bulb may be burned out - dash bulb failure is rather common.
