A/C shrader valve S80

A/C quit kicking on so I opened up the little black cap to check the charge and got a face full of oil and fogg. Looks like a failed schrader valve. Is this the normal place to check and refill the freon? Seems like there was another location.

There are 2 places where there are schrader valves to add freon for the AC. There is one on the top of the radiator that requires some special adapter/coupler that only the dealers have. There is another "standard" schrader valve on the AC line in the area about under the power steering reservoir. This is the port that I used to add a can of freon using a standard AC recharge kit that you can buy at Walmart or any auto parts store.

I think Volvo included the second port because they knew that many AC shops might not have the special coupler. But they put it in a place that's kind of hard to get to.

BTW, I added that one can of freon about 3 years ago and my AC stills blows nice and cold. It should blow about 40-45 degrees on a real hot day while driving and the fan on low speed. You can measure it with an AC thermometer (available everywhere, about $5). Just stick the probe into the center vent and watch it as you drive.

    Good luck.

The one and only place to fill the system.

But, now that the system is full of air and humidity, I suggest replacing the schrader valve along with a new accumulator. Have an AC shop vacuum the system and refill it with R134a.

The system is not full of air. It was still bubbling and spraying freon when I put the cap back on. It is still under pressure ,,just not as much.
Do I still need an accumulator it it is not exposed to moisture.

Because the valve will have to come out to be replaced, it is a good time to put in a new accumulator. Amazing, how much junk is in the bottom, especially if you have ever filled filled the system yourself. Accumulators are fairly cheap and easy to swap out.
