'93 850 for $800, should I? Advice. 850

A 1993 850 n/a for sale in my town for $800. All it needs is a new water pump and battery. Only 97,937k. What do you think?

A new water pump at 97K miles? Skip it, unless you already have a 93 and need a parts car.

How was it determined that a new water pump is needed? Lost coolant and overheated? BYOB, Bring your own battery (and a jug of water) and see if it runs and doesn't have a blown head gasket. If you can't confirm that then you're taking a real chance. In that case you'd be better off spending twice that on a car that runs.

Low mileage could be due to a broken odometer gear. You can read off the actual mileage using the OBDI port. Do a search for directions.

Also, if you're not already aware, the '93 850 has four-lug wheels and other '93 model year only differences.

Lots of bad things happen to a car if it isn't driven.

I passed on it. He just kept lowering the price and seemed really eager to hand it off to somone, which would be fine other times, but I suspect that he knows that it needs allot more than he is telling. He told me that the cel is on again, and that "there might be a piston misfiring. Oh Ok...well... He said he think it needs a tune-up and a new alternator. No thanks. Not worth it. The 93 is a unique model year and I know it is hard to find parts for it. Maybe if it was a 95 850 wagon....

Look for a 1995 855 T 850

They should be around $1000 and are a lot more fun to fix and drive :)

The aluminum block engines do not respond well to overheating. One tries to do everything to ensure they don't overheat. These are problems you do not want. Run, do not walk, away from this engine unless you're planning on replacing it.
