Transmission lifting for Control Arm bolt removal V70-XC70 1998

Hi,

1998 V70R AWD - replacing the driver's side control arm due to a worn ball joint. This model has arms with the 4-bolt subframe mount.

How do I nudge the transmission up to get the old bolts out and new ones in? I tried jacking up the tranny, but this just moves up the whole car :-)

As always, thanks in advance.

Dan

The transmission mount can be accessed through the LH wheel well. Its an aluminum bracket with a sleeve that sits on a stud coming out of a rubber mount. Undo that top nut and you should gain yourself some room. May also need to unbolt engine mount near starter for more gain.

I think you'll have to undo some of the bolts on the engine mounts on that side and lift the trans with a jack. I know there is a 'track rod' type mounting right (almost) in the middle of the engine.

Maybe undo that mount and do a real easy lift and try to see where it's getting hung up?

You'll want to be careful laying underneath there and poking around with a big heavy engine/trans resting on a jack...

I did the right/pass side this past weekend and it wasn't that bad, but then the engine mount was easy to find and undo. On that side you life up using a block of wood under the oil pan. It's got to be pretty similar on the left/driver's side.

Doing the same job today on my 2000 v70 with the four bolt control arm. Having difficulty banging the new ball joint and lining up the two rearmost bolts that go through the subframe into the control arm. How did you get the bolt holes to line up? Also, how hard did you need to bang on the ball joint to get it into place?
