Can't get the cover off ECC unit to replace bulbs! 850 1996

Hello All,

Maybe I'm missing something. I have a '96 850 GLT wagon that came with dual climate control. One of the bulbs that illuminates the driver's side temperature control burned out. I removed the SC-815 radio and then slide the ECC unit out of the dashboard. I disconnect the 3 wires and removed it to a work desk. There were 3 screws that seemed to hold the face plate of the ECC unit on. I removed them, along with the three dials and the nob on the fan control.

I could pop the plastic face of the ECC unit on both ends, but it would not budge from the center. I tried to gently pry it out, but no luck. I didn't want to crack the plastic, so frustrated, I put the ECC unit back in the car with the bulb still not replaced. I did check to see if there were any snap clips on the side of the face plate of the ECC unit that I had missed, but there weren't any. It seemed as though there was a bolt or clip that was securing this ECC face plate dead center that I could not unscrew or release.

Any suggestions? P.S. this is probably the first time since the car was built (13 years) that anyone has attempted to remove the face plate of the ECC. Maybe it's just stuck?

What is very frustrating is I had replaced a similar bulb with no problem on ECC for a 1999 XC. The set of up of the ECC unit was exactly the same as the 859. Go figure? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hugh

The lamps on the ECC can be replaced from behind. Remove the sheet metal cover and then you can get to the lamps from inside.

      Lee,

Thanks. I'll let you know how it works out. I appreciate your help because it was so frustrating not to make this simple repair.
