Overfilled engine oil. Drain a little via filter or plug? 850 1995

Overfilled by about 0.5 - 0.75 qts. Can I drop the filter and get about that much out or should I try and get the amount out via the drain plug? Have done this over 100 times and never overfilled till now.
Any damage done? The dipstick isn't frothy.
Thanks,
Dukester

Both methods work. The oil filter is probably not as messy as fighting to put the plug back in. In either case, you will get oil on your hands up to your elbows :)
Replacing the filter is usually a 1 quart job.
If you pull the drain plug, the crush washer might not work again...

I don't think that much extra oil is going to hurt anything. .75 qt extra over 5.5 qts (IIRC) is around 13%.

If the level of oil is below the filter mount, that sounds like a good candidate. Just turn the filter over and drain.

Personally, I would use the drain plug and slowly drain an approximate amount out, and reuse the crush washer the one additional time. I don't overtighten my plug, so there is possibly a slight amount of crush left in it.

The suggestion to suck it out the dipstick tube is an interesting one of you have a suitable pump.

Sucking it out of the dipstick is exactly how the oil is changed in my boat, oddly enough it has the Volvo Penta drivetrain. Boater's World or any other marine supply shop should have the necessary siphon apparatus to do it.

Suck it out the dip stick.
